Bottled (6.8%). Dark amber. The malt character is similar to other St. Bernardus - deep, soft and rich. It is clean and has a salty finish. Really good, but lacks the final touch to make it truly astonishing.

Dark musty, hazy brown colour with ruby highlights and a very dense micro-bubble comprised tan head. Aroma of sour cherries, malt, raisins must and a bit of dark fruit (grapes & apples) sweetness. Medium-bodied; Strong maltiness, assertive sweetness and a subtle sourness that only lasts for a few seconds right at the beginning of the taste. Aftertaste bittered from the malt and a bit of subtle chocolate flavour (not initially picked up). An odd combination of all these different essences and tastes, but it works out very well. This is somewhat similar to the Abt 12, and if you liked that...definately pick this one up! Overall, this beer is a bit better than average for a style which already represents so many VERY good beers! I bought this 33 cL bottle at Premier Gourmet in Buffalo, New York and sampled it on 1-September-2003.

[This rating is for the old 9% version] Hints of yeast in the aroma. A very dark beer that has a filling taste with hints of yeast and fruit. [The 7.5% version] An unclear orange beer with a fine head. The aroma is very sweet with an undistiguable powerful spice note and a weak note of black peber. The flavor is strond but flat yet the alcohol prickles even though it is just 7.5% ABV. In the middle it reminds me of flat wheat with notes of oranges and other fruits. It ends on a dry wheat note. The flavor is somewhat strange. It is definatly not as good as the Triple 9. This is not my beer. [6/4/5/4/11]

The aroma is sweet, fruity with notes of plums - a pretty complex aroma. The color is a deep red and it has a small beige head though fast disappearing. The flavor is sweet and rich in fruit; plums, raisins, and prunes. The alcohol ticles the tongue which combines with the bitterness into a dry end. It has a good palate which in combination with the alcohol makes it rather winous.
