Description
In 1992, Paul Theakston took a daring leap into the unknown. As a fifth generation brewer of his family company, he chose to leave T&R Theakstons following its sale to a national brewery. Instead, he chose to champion independent brewing in Yorkshire and built his own brewery in the very same town, Masham. The brewhouse contains a mixture of tradition and innovation, using the Yorkshire Square Fermentation system which we hold dearly. Our original brewhouse was built from reclaimed equipment which we still use to this day.

Cask at the Flute & Flagon, Solihull. Clear gold with small creamy white top, great lacing. This one was quite peach, orange and biscuit notes with a grassy to pithy citric bitterness. Smooth bodied. Decent.

Bottle from HOTM. Pours black with small beige head, leaves nice lacing. Aroma is roasted malts, molasses, liquorice, chocolate, orange oil. Very roasty, dark chocolate, liquorice, fig and orange peel, rich and dry. This is not an artificial beer at all. The chocolate and orange has been added to enhance an already decent stout as it should be. Medium bodied, smooth, slightly chewy finish, soft carbonation. Its a thumbs up from me.

Bottle from HOTM. Pours a clear dark brown, with small off-white head. Aroma is nutty, roasty malts, brown sugar, light floral hop. Taste has less nuttiness and more chocolate compared to aroma but broadly the same. Not picking up much if any orange peel listed on ingredients which is a shame. Clean tasting, easy drinking. Decent overall.

Can from Lidl. Dark red-brown with beige head. Aroma of peanuts, chocolate, light roast and savoury note. Taste is sweet with notes of peanuts, caramel, chocolate and overdone with the sea salt as its the main taste in the finish. Medium smooth body, soft carbonation. Almost a great beer for the price but they over salted it. Never thought I'd write that about a beer.

Bottle for Lidl Inverurie. It pours neaera black wig a handsome khaki head. The aroma is bitter - sweet, dark roasted malt creamy, milk chocolate, coffee grounds and some burnt toast. The taste is not dissimilar, roasted malt, bitter - sweet character, milk chocolate, coffee grounds, touch of mocha and a hint of acidity with a smooth, toasty finish. Average body and moderate, fluffy carbonation. Rather nice to be honest.

500ml bottle from a Morrisons online shop. Pours black with a moderate sized aerated tanned head. Aroma of dry burnt wood, hint of sweetness. Dry burnt light ash note balanced by a sweet malt, quite light. Underwhelming at first in its simplicity but it grew on me a lot, like a Guinness it has a lovely session quality where you keep wanting more.

Can from House of Trembling Madness, online. Clear gold, brief fizzy head, no bubbly retention. Standard. Decent apple aroma core, peel and all, some sugars. Taste is sweet, slight syrupiness to it, tart green dessert apples, a modest dry and bitter crispness. Its ok.
