Description
The Schlossbrauerei Kaltenberg was established in 1871 by Sigmund von Willibald. The Von Willibalds owned the castle and brewery till 1917 when the premises were acquired by the Schülein family. The Schülein heirs sold the castle and brewery in 1954 to the Wittelsbach family. The König Ludwig Schlossbrauerei Kaltenberg continues the 800-year tradition of brewing of the Wittelsbach dynasty. Prince Luitpold of Bavaria started in the 1970s to turn the small brewery in Kaltenberg Castle into a modern company.

The castle still houses part of the brewing installation of the König Ludwig Schlossbrauerei. 100,000 hectoliters of beer are brewed here every year. But most activities of the company are located in the large modern brewery in Fürstenfeldbruck. Since 2001 the König Ludwig Schlossbrauerei Kaltenberg has been a 50/50 joint venture with Warsteiner.

Thanks Jonas! Nicely hazy reddish-brown. Pleasingly rich malt nose with a toffee accent and just a hint of dark fruits. Very rich, decadent bock. Toffeeish, dark sugars and subtle fruit accents. Very smooth. A compelling bock.

Bottled@random beerplace in Bamberg. Reddish amber colour with small beige head. Aroma is malts, alcohol and some mild earthy and bready notes. Flavour is quite earthy and some bready malty notes as well. Alcohol gives a certain burn as well. Feels like this one had passed it’s prime a bit (didn’t see the BBE on the bottle though).

50cl bottle at Ship & Mitre, Liverpool. Clear darkish brown, thick beige head. Some decent malt on aroma. It’s a little slight on character, some choc. Not hugely satisfying overall, just a bit boring to be honest. Some dark malts, but not enough character to make it interesting.

Bottled as "König Ludwig Hell" (Beerangel, BB 10/2009). Golden color, small white head. Metallic, hayish and grainy aroma. Crisp carbonation. Hayish-grassy hops, pale buttery malts, some metal. Leaves malty aftertaste. A bit thin mouthfeel for 5% brew.

(bottle, as König Ludwig Hell) Clear, pale golden colour with a big and blond foamy head. Moderately sweet grainy and doughy malty aroma with shy notes of citrus and spicy hops. Slightly bitter flavour, light bodied with a moderate carbonation. Strawy malty base with a whiff of grains; quite dry and slightly bitter finish. unfortunately with notes of metal; otherwise a drinkable Helles (04.VI.09).
