Description
The Schlossbrauerei Kaltenberg was established in 1871 by Sigmund von Willibald. The Von Willibalds owned the castle and brewery till 1917 when the premises were acquired by the Schülein family. The Schülein heirs sold the castle and brewery in 1954 to the Wittelsbach family. The König Ludwig Schlossbrauerei Kaltenberg continues the 800-year tradition of brewing of the Wittelsbach dynasty. Prince Luitpold of Bavaria started in the 1970s to turn the small brewery in Kaltenberg Castle into a modern company.

The castle still houses part of the brewing installation of the König Ludwig Schlossbrauerei. 100,000 hectoliters of beer are brewed here every year. But most activities of the company are located in the large modern brewery in Fürstenfeldbruck. Since 2001 the König Ludwig Schlossbrauerei Kaltenberg has been a 50/50 joint venture with Warsteiner.

Bügelverschlußflasche (aus Garching !): Hazy, orangey coloured, small but stable creamy off-white head; solid wheat-malty and roasted-malty nose with phenolic edges; light to moderate sweet-bitter-sourish flavour, astonishingly light bodied for a beer of of 8.0%; short sweetish-wheat-malty finish with some acidity in the aftertaste. Not great..........

Had this as König Ludwig Weissbier Leicht. The bottle looks good, the beer in the glass also. Starts mild, modest fruity, the finish modest sourish, a bit like a non alcohol-beer. Not really good!

The bottle looks good, the beer in the glass also. Tastes typical for a non-alcohol beer, a little bit like apple, too sourish. Not really good!

Bottle @ Café de Paas. Dark reddish brown beer, beige head. Aroma of caramel, malts and chocolate. Flavour of malts, caramel and chocolate, faintly bitter finish. Could have been better with a bit more body, but very nice nevertheless.

Sampled as König Ludwig Weissbier. 11.2 oz bottle purchased as part of a mix a six at Lukas Liquors in Kansas City, Missouri. 21 Feb 2009 best before date on label. Pour is hazed golden yellow with a nice 2 inch white head. Sporadic bubbles float to the surface. Very firm head falls slow to reveal nice lacing. Aroma is very faint, not much there at all. A bit of wheat, a bit of spicy yeast. Taste is husky wheat, some grassy coriander and not a whole bunch else. Really not much character here. Palate was on the watery side. There really are not many flaws on this beer, just a bit dull. Not among my favorite Hefes.
