Description
The Schlossbrauerei Kaltenberg was established in 1871 by Sigmund von Willibald. The Von Willibalds owned the castle and brewery till 1917 when the premises were acquired by the Schülein family. The Schülein heirs sold the castle and brewery in 1954 to the Wittelsbach family. The König Ludwig Schlossbrauerei Kaltenberg continues the 800-year tradition of brewing of the Wittelsbach dynasty. Prince Luitpold of Bavaria started in the 1970s to turn the small brewery in Kaltenberg Castle into a modern company.

The castle still houses part of the brewing installation of the König Ludwig Schlossbrauerei. 100,000 hectoliters of beer are brewed here every year. But most activities of the company are located in the large modern brewery in Fürstenfeldbruck. Since 2001 the König Ludwig Schlossbrauerei Kaltenberg has been a 50/50 joint venture with Warsteiner.

Bottle: Hazy, almost cloudy, huge off-white head, slowly diminishing, golden coloured; fresh fruity nose (lemons, summer fruit), bananas+cloves+yeast in the wings; fizzy mouthfeel, a bit sticky, sweetish flavour, quite full bodied; short, sweet-fruity, a bit yeasty-bitter finish. A well rounded, decent Bavarian Weizen without too much edges.......

Draught Deep caramel-amber body. Creamy, off-white head with a good lace. Very nice aroma of sweet malts, flowers, spices, ... Lightly sweet, lightly bitter initial flavour. Moderately bitter finish. The flavour is somewhat disappointing after the aroma, which created a good impression. So it’s not as interesting as I first assumed.

Amber with a green shine, fully hazy; absolutely huge, pale amber head, collapsing. Bready nose with a sourish-fresh vegetable or greenery streak. Warmer more fruity. Rather sweet-fruity taste, whilst the finish is akin to wet grass. Very little impact of the coloured malts on the flavour, strange. Warming up I get banana finally. Medium bodied, wheat slickness. Nowhere as good as the Helles, not even a particulary good Dunkelweizen.

Stupendously huge, dense yellowish tinted head, not very stable over fully trouble, yellow-greenish beer. Banana-filled nose with a bit of grass or hay. Light spicey touch. Sweet-fruity taste with banana and a whiff of citruspeel. A spicey finish, remindful of nutmeg rather than cloves. Gets more sweet going on, however, becoming more "fade". Wheat/grist slickness, velvety texture. Slightly empty aftertaste. More than decent Weissbier, despite the size of the brewery. Only possible in Germany, I guess. Tasted as König Ludwig Weissbier Hell Thanks, Sebastian

Test vom 20.6.2006, Gebinde: Glasflasche Noten: 7,7,7,7,11,7 - 7,20
