Description
The Schlossbrauerei Kaltenberg was established in 1871 by Sigmund von Willibald. The Von Willibalds owned the castle and brewery till 1917 when the premises were acquired by the Schülein family. The Schülein heirs sold the castle and brewery in 1954 to the Wittelsbach family. The König Ludwig Schlossbrauerei Kaltenberg continues the 800-year tradition of brewing of the Wittelsbach dynasty. Prince Luitpold of Bavaria started in the 1970s to turn the small brewery in Kaltenberg Castle into a modern company.

The castle still houses part of the brewing installation of the König Ludwig Schlossbrauerei. 100,000 hectoliters of beer are brewed here every year. But most activities of the company are located in the large modern brewery in Fürstenfeldbruck. Since 2001 the König Ludwig Schlossbrauerei Kaltenberg has been a 50/50 joint venture with Warsteiner.

Bottle: Pale golden coloured, visible carbonation, small but firm white head; malty to grainy nose, a bit dusty; mainly sweetish flavour with a shy bitterness; slightly bitter and grainy finish with a faint herbal aftertaste. Very boring nearly no hops; the question is, why aren’t diabetics allowed to enjoy the good and aromatic humulus lupulus ?

(bottle) Hazy yellow colour with a big rocky, slowly lacing foam. Fruity (apricot, banana) and yeasty aroma with a touch of cloves. Slight sweet flavour, light to medium body. Malty and yeasty taste with a subtle banana fruitiness and a clove-spicy and slight citrus-fruity finish of medium length. Aromatic and solid thirst quencher with decent character, that only lacks a bit body.

(Bottle 50 cl) Murky, greyish brown with a fine, dense head. The wheat leaves more aroma than flavour. Very dry with an unusual bitterness. 190500

(Bottle 50 cl) Golden beer with a huge, frothy head. Not many wheaty esters found here, this is quite pilsner-like - but then again, that’s probably the main idea with Kristalls, Ligt-bodied but very refreshing. 200400

(bottle) Cloudy brown colour with a big foamy almost white head. Shy malty aroma with a bit vanilla. Light sweet flavour, light to medium body. The taste is not much impressing for a Dunkelweizen. Faint fruitiness of bananas with a light malty taste and an average finish with almost no bitterness. A quite disappointing Dunkelweizen according to its titled name.

A hazy orange beer with a small white head. The aroma contains notes of hops, yeast, and brewing mash. The flavor dry hoppy with notes of brewing mash as well as hints of alcohol. A boring beer.
