Description
The Schlossbrauerei Kaltenberg was established in 1871 by Sigmund von Willibald. The Von Willibalds owned the castle and brewery till 1917 when the premises were acquired by the Schülein family. The Schülein heirs sold the castle and brewery in 1954 to the Wittelsbach family. The König Ludwig Schlossbrauerei Kaltenberg continues the 800-year tradition of brewing of the Wittelsbach dynasty. Prince Luitpold of Bavaria started in the 1970s to turn the small brewery in Kaltenberg Castle into a modern company.

The castle still houses part of the brewing installation of the König Ludwig Schlossbrauerei. 100,000 hectoliters of beer are brewed here every year. But most activities of the company are located in the large modern brewery in Fürstenfeldbruck. Since 2001 the König Ludwig Schlossbrauerei Kaltenberg has been a 50/50 joint venture with Warsteiner.

Probably the most aromatic wheat I have had. Tons of citrus aroma with some banana and coriander. Clearer apperance than I like for a wheat. Good flavor, sweet with citrus.

Dark brown cloudy appearance, thick frothy head. Fruity aroma, yeasty and coriander spicy: a typical dunkel-aroma. Taste is a bit thin and watery, but nicely balanced caramel and chocolat malty with the typical dunkelweizen features. OK beer.

Rerate from tap: cloudy golden, creamy lacing golden head. Mellow, subdued fruit, light minerals, grassy light herbal buttering. Good balance, easy drinkable. Old rating: 4 4 3 3 8. Very subdued grain aroma with a bit added wet sponge. Cloudy orange-yellow color, low but decent creamy head with lace. I have never had a Keller/Zwickel which was this anonymous before - a little bit fruity malt and a retronasal (borrowing the word if i may Joris :-) ) dust. Medium body, dry yeast mouthfeel. The bottle was fresh so there are no excuses - this is a boring beer.

Contract brewed at FX Matt. Slightly hazy tannish colour...rather un-pils like. Caramelly, slightly nutty aroma. Slightly watery. Slightly hedgey hop note. Hint of plastic. Sightly sticky finish, watery. Not very good and not very much of a pilsner. The English version is even worse.

Bottle brewed by Krönleins, Sweden. Pours clear golden with an airy head. Somewhat sour and perfumy aroma. Thin body. This beer doesn’t taste like a Märzen, it tastes like a typical beer from Krönleins: perfumy and floral with a grainy, bitter finish.

A yellow beer with a fine but disappearing head. The aroma is weak, but sweet. The flavor is sweet and malty with notes of hay and straws, and pretty carbonated. A fresh pilsener.
