(355ml bottle from the LCBO) Poured murky brownish amber with a big fluffy white head that left a lot of lace, and some floaty bits of sediment below. Aroma is soapy, resiny, woody coniferous hops with some rounded pit-fruit type aromas but not too much citrus. Also a fair bit of caramel malt aroma behind. Flavour is again slightly soapy pine resin and fruit, not a sharp citrus peel bite, meshing reasonably well with the sweet caramel and light biscuit of the malts. Moderate bitterness throughout, finishes fairly dry and hoppy with a hint of malt sweetness. Fairly full mouthfeel, carb a bit lower than average, a bit creamy. A good IPA but something a little weird about the hop profile, a little less refreshing than most.

A deep dark ale with a thin mocha head. In aroma, sweet doughy malt with dark fruits, so-so. In mouth, sweet licorice malt, with bananas, a bit unbalanced. Cask at Toronto Cask Days 2012, Oct. 27 2012.

(500ml 2012 bottle from LCBO) Poured opaque black with a thin tan head and no lace. Aromas of molasses, roasted malts, coffee, nutty vanilla and a little soy, but not particularly overpowering on the nose. Flavour a little more full. Roasted sweet dark malts, light coffee, milk chocolate, vanilla, wood, a tick sour towards the finish. Finish reasonably dry and bitter with wood and roast. Mouthfeel is not smooth but not very full, carb soft, little alcohol even when warm. Decent flavours, balanced but nothing to stand out from the imperial stout crowd.

Bouteille 500ml.

2012 edition, found at the LCBO. Brown bottle with black wax over cap. Pours a real dark brown colour with no highlights found. Average head, creamy mocha, decent retention and a little lace. Beautiful coffee aromas with notes of roasted malt, molasses and nuts. Full-bodied with a nice silky smooth mouthfeel, and no burning at all. The taste is even mild, but with some roasted malt, coffee, cocoa, burnt wood, and hops showing in the end, giving some hints of apples. Goes down too smoothly... dangerous !! Nice to see one of the better Amsterdam products appear in Ottawa stores. Keep ’em coming !

Smells very good from the outset. Pours black/mahogany with mocha foam. There’s smoke, roast malt and hops in the taste here. Pretty low carbonation. Taste has a little spice but palate is very cloying - leaves sour after five second mark. Very sweet and syrupy, palate is very viscous. Almost a little puckering. Starts off well but doesn’t really end on the same note. A little overrated. 2012 bottle.

This lager poured a deep amber colour with a big, off white, foamy head. Nice lacing on the glass. Scents include brown sugar, smoke, malt and light coffee. First taste was creamy and mildly sweet with flavours of malt, smoke and light cocoa. Finish is sweet with malt and smoke flavours lingering.

Draught at Volo, Toronto
Hazy amber color, with red hue; creamy head. Nice resiny hop aroma, although revealing some crystal in the background. Lean mouthfeel; caramel flavor, some disturbing crystal; strong bitterness, not too resiny, and just lightly fruity.
Sturdy IPA.

This stout poured a deep balck colour with a deep tan coloured head that was very creamy. To the nose there are scents of roasted malts, molassass with a little coffee and cocoa. A hint of the old time Meloids Cough candies too. First sip had a very heavy mouthfeel with strong flavours of smoke and strong coffee,. Finish was as roasty as you can get. Very full bodied Imp stout, not for the faint!

(On draught at Bryden’s, Sept 22 2012 as Late Summer Saison; assume this is the same beer with additional ageing per description). Poured a slightly cloudy blond with slight orange hints, seemed to clear a bit as it warmed. Aroma had moderate, slightly banana ester and funky yeast characters, Some wheat and graininess from the pilsner malts, herbal and citrus notes that showed coriander and a little lemon character with the hops. Flavour is nicely bitter and biscuity, with some light banana, herbs, light pepper and a bit of tart lemon peel on the finish. Mouthfeel medium for a saison, average carbonation. Nice, balanced and fairly complex saison but not overly polished. Refreshing and quaffable.
