Was surprise to see this one in an Ottawa LCBO (as 416 is a Toronto area code - and we all know how we feel about that in Canada’s Nation Capital :). Pours a hazy light golden colour with a white head that gives out nice dirty lacing. Great fresh spicy wheat nose (which surprised me also, coming from Amsterdam). Pretty good for a light beer with a refreshing wheat mouthfeel. Grainy flavours with soft hops in the finish. I see lots of resemblance to Steam Whistle, hints of the same thing in the smell and taste. Even the nice simple bottle presentation is close to its competition. Not as good as SW, but better than most Amsterdam brews. The plus for this one is the unfiltered aspect. Great for the warm days we are having right now - and hockey playoffs that are still on.

smells skunky, green bottle. A little astringent on the leave but otherwise tastes like lager. If urban wheat means this is supposed to taste like a dirty public telephone then this is certainly the 416... Bottle at Teds collision.

A hazed amber ale with a thin big bubbled white head. In aroma, a strange pungent hops with catnip and wild grass, with caramel malt and sulfur. In mouth, a nice smooth grassy hops biscuit malt with floral hops, citrus pulp, a bit of funk. Cask at Ontario Cask IPA Challenge, April 21, 2012.

(500mL 2012 bottle from LCBO) Poured cellar temp, a dark cola colour with an inch of tan head that faded very quickly. Aroma malty and complex, dark bread with some nuttiness, a bit of chocolate roastiness and some dark fruits and spice. Flavour is again malt-driven, lots of toasted nuts, chocolate, fig, spice and treacle matched with a lot of bittering hops to keep the beer from getting too cloying. Finishes dry. Smooth, rich but well balanced and hides its alcohol. A little lean for the style, but a good beer.

Originally rated January 2005. Poured a deep brown colour with red highlights. The head was thin and beige in colour with not much retention. Caught some aromas of molasse and hints of nuts. Coffee and molasse were apparent in the mouth, with burnt malts. Very smooth. A very good summer beer to enjoy outside with a cigar.

Originally rated March 2005 (when KLB was still brewing this one). This cream ale pours a golden-amber colour with a small head, but fine lacing. Carbonation is very active with tiny bubbles. The nose is slightly malty, but no more. The taste starts out mildly bitter and finishes very smooth and grainy. Not a very powerful brew, and from KLB, I much prefer their Nut Brown and Raspberry Wheat. Still a descent swill/session beer.

Originally rated May 2005. Poured a light yellow colour with not bad retention. There was big bubble carbonation at the bottom of the glass. The nose was of metallic scents with mild malt. The mouthfeel was flat and smooth. Tasted mostly corn with very slight bitterness. Refreshingly clean, but a clear dissapointment.

Originally rated May 2005 (under the name Nut Brown Ale). This is Amsterdam’s competition brew to KLB Nut Brown (both brewed in Ontario - before Amsterdam bought out KLB). This one poured a copper colour with a tanned head and decent retention. The lacing was not much and the carbonation was heavy. Had roasted malt scents. The taste was bitter and roasted with a smooth drier aftertaste. The nut was also pronounced. Full mouthfeel. Not a bad beer, but very close to the Kawartha Lakes Brewery one. Note: This Downtown Brown version (many years after - end of 2013) has a nice, long lasting head. Nice coffee nose with the roasted malts and hints of vanilla. The taste is watery with some light rusty hops. Mild bitterness. Smells better now than the taste and mouthfeel. Points are for the old version.

Originally rated June 2005 (before Amsterdam bought KLB out - I think). This strong pale ale pours an amber colour with a decent head and lacing. Tiny bubble carbonation, average. The nose is of nutty malt and kind of floral. Sweet malt composes the taste with hints of fruits and caramel. Slight bitter aftertaste. Pretty good session APA.

Smells sticky sweet, honey and alcohol. Colour is mahogany. Taste has more sweetness that picks up as the beer warms up. The sweet smell becomes quite strong then. Taste has strong after of alcohol with some alc-related bitterness. I don’t detect any of the chocolate that the label claims. Tall bottle from licbo.
