(Aged sample) Amber with a slight veiling; thin white rim. Little nose: dusty, faint aromatic plants. Sweet taste, quite some alcohol, nutty, crème de noix, and a faint flavour as for praline (Belgian chocolates) filling. Rather burning mouth sensation, but watery texture alongside. Phoo. Not very convincing. Thin, rather like a strong lager attempt with top-fermentation.

(This beer exists under at least two names -Bourgondisch Brabant and Ter Hunen. Probably others designate the same beer. Sample fairly aged) Amber with pale greenish shine; yellow-amber dense head, gone is secs. Nutty nose, as like fresh almonds; cookies, cake, alcoholic. Nutty taste, now more as hazelnuts, sweet, bit of alcoholic notes, as a cooking brandy or a Pineau des Charentes. Slight herbal finish. Rather light mouthfeel. Alcohol, but not burning. Aftertaste gets bready notes, and 'palm'tree (Buscus sempervirens) aroma. As usual with 3 Horne, this beer is better aged than young. Less positive is its strange straddling on two styles: on one hand an ordinary Belgian Speciale with a light mouthfeel, easily oxidated, and on the other hand strong ale/ abbey dubbel characteristics as alcohol, nutty and liqueurish flavours.

(Fairly aged sample) Deep chestnut colour, clear, nearly no head. Woody nose, touch of acidity. Nutty - but not as in oxidation (hazel- or walnut oil), but rather as cashews. At the first sip this is a rather neutral beer, but after a few more, it appears to be a extremely well balanced one. If the main taste is caramel-sweet, like a usual bock, there is a definite sourish touch - mild sour as lactic acid. Again woody, even a touch of bitter, and a fruity palate, maybe blueberry-like. A dash of fiery mouthfeel, not aggressive, but it just delivers the kick to get interested in this beer. I have said it before: 3 Horne's beers only get better with age. Nothing compared to this: it was mediocre at best when fresh, now it is excellent!

Nearly black, vague purple shine; fine irregular green-brown head, reasonnably stable. Dark malts, cypress and a bit of alcohol in the nose. Very bitter, chicory-like taste. Retronasal again chicory and (stale) coffee. Not hoppy in character, unfortunately. Better bodied but thin texture. In the aftertaste & warming up, the beer becomes more spicey and the mouthfeel soupy. A bit thin, and a rather unpleasant chicory-like bitterness. Just some alcohol. Seen my former experiences with 3 Horne, my advice is; buy, put it in the cellar and re-visit in 3 or 5 years - bound to be better.

Cloudy orange brown color, medium head. Aroma is sweet malty, spicy, raisin, but also a bit flowery and hoppy. Sweet sour malty taste, candy sugar. Bit alcoholic finish maybe.

(Rather well aged) Dark amber, with burgundy shine. Slight yellow head, immediately dissipating. Nose of cookies, very sweet cake, a bit wet, with fruit. Fruitcake, in the nicest possible way, with a dash of Cherry Heering. Sweet taste, but nothing exaggerate. Fruity again, nearly oud bruin Flemish style, without the lactic acid component. Caramel malt. Again: a liquified fruitcake, cherry. I can even taste the cinnamon. Bit sticky, gummy mouthfeel. Short whoosh of alcoholburn and somewhat watery texture. Strange. This beer is at odds with what I normally prefer - but I do admire it. Sweet - but in a dignified way. A dear old sugar granddad. But he's still major shareholder at the bank.

(Aged a few years) Old gold colour. Big bubbles, irregular head, lively. Nose of an alcohol-laden cake, cookies, caramel, prickly sensation. Quite sweet taste with bitterish overtones as by burnt caramel. Very slight maderisation. Alcohol again very prominent. Sweet finish, treacle-like, but not cloying. Alcoholburn, but smooth. I agree with Per's peppery finish. I was never very impressed by 3 Horne's beers when fresh. Ageing definitely seems to become them. Not that difficult at 9.4%. Still, worth trying.
