On nitro January 2005 at Redbones, listed as Ridgeway Foreign Extra Stout, but this is most likely the culprit. Unfortunately it was not listed as being on nitro, so I was unpleasantly surprised when they served me the glass. Oh well, I’ll try not to let my bias get in the way. Typical, boring, nitro pour, medium tan, creamy head atop a dark brown-black body with light mahogany tints. Dull aroma, some moderate roast and bittersweet cocoa and brown sugar. Flavor, for a nitrogenated beer, is not terrible. Perhaps one of the better ones I’ve had. Plenty of roasted malt bitterness, oily/watery feel. Brown sugar, some yeast and charred wood notes. Light notes of tart cherries on the finish, with some smooth milk chocolate. I bet this beer would be wonderful with CO2. I’d like to rate it without taking the nitrogen effects in to account, but no one forced the brewer to make this a nitrogen beer. Would gladly rerate a non-nitrogenated sample.

cask - not very good at all - wet and bitter coupled with a slight vinous character - almost tastes like chewing on used coffee grounds - a bit of malt in the middle tries to creep its way through with some chocolate flavors, but gets beaten down by the bitterness.

Never heard of this one before but on a flight of whimsy I grabbed it. Sampled from a 16.9 oz brown bottle this brew poured a medium amber color with a huge fluffy orange head that lingered for a long time. The aroma was sweet with noted grapefruit and pineapple elements. The flavor was sweet and very hoppy yet not overpowering. The grapefruit and pineapple assert themselves well. There is a bit of malt balance but overall this beer is heavily tilted towards the hops. A bit surprising in a British beer. Nice. I could drink a nice amount of this though there are far better beers on the market.

Bottled. Bronze colour, small head. Aroma of caramel and apple. Sweet with clean, rounded mouthfeel . Rather full bodied. Very simplistic.

Bottled. Deep golden. Roch hay aroma. Soapy and richly hoppy. Dry with bold, yet soft mouthfeel. Hops are dominant, but well balanced by malt. An English hop monster!

Bottled. Dark brown. Very phenolic. Sweet with bold, simplistic malt character. Unimpressive. Santa can keep his butt to himself.

Nearly opaque, with short-lived, smallish tan head - aroma of coffee left on the burner too long, and some burnt toffee/caramel - bittersweet chocolate at first, which quickly leads to over-sweet, lactose flavors - thin body and poorly masked alcohol - some hints of coffee and spice - alcohol burn in the finish - some of the elements are alright, but they just don’t work together well, more balance and a fuller body is needed to make this brew good.

An amber beer with a fine head. The aroma is very lightly fruity. The flavor is very sweet with notes of caramel and the carbondioxide running across the tongue, before it finishes with an OK bitterness. For me it is a little too carbonated - a cask version I think would be good.

Sampled cask conditoned at Oliver Twist, Stockholm.
Pale amber. Very fruity, sweet and resiny. Generously malty with a big dose of rye bread and a salty licorice finsih. Peculiar roggenbock character.
