Description
Brouwerij Sterkens has a particularly rich and very tasteful history. In 1651, the Sterkens family began to brew their own beer out of interest. In that time, they were local farmers with small amount of money to brew some quantities. As they were brewing, they wrote down every single detail of the recipes they made and the way they produced the beer. These notes were given from father to son, for generations on. When the family noticed that brewing beer gradually got more priority than working on the farm, they chose to professionalize the brewery and to fill out more quality beers. The delicious and spicy St. Sebastiaan and St. Paul beers were well appreciated in Belgium, what led to the fact that Brouwerij Sterkens was one of the first breweries who went abroad for exportation.

The current 14th generation of Brouwerij Sterkens have ensured that the beers of Sterkens are appreciated in more than 30 countries on all 5 continents. The Sterkens family is looking to the near future with a lot of enthousiasm and confidence, without forgetting the past. After all, Brouwerij Sterkens is still bottling their beers in distinctive and exceptional packaging.

Sterkens did stop with brewing and became a client brewer in 2008.

Bottled. Deep brown colour with mediumsized brown head. Leaves some slight lace. Aroma is hops, mild caramel malts, mild nectary sweetness and some yeast. Flavour is mild caramel malts, yeast and quite much wooden notes. Wellbalanced brew, that hides the 6.9% completely.

750mL Ceramic swingtop bottle. Listed as Hoogstraten Poorter. Pours with a hazy brown body. Aroma of dried fruits, honey, tangerine, and chocolate malts. Full retention and lacing on the head. Doesn’t taste anything like the porter it claims to be. For sure a belgian, if not a belgian streong. Fruity sweet taste. Bit too fizzy carbonation ontop of a watery body. Overall quite good.

Pours with a large, rocky, light brown head with an ultra-dark brown body. Good lacing and decent retention throughout. Aroma of hops, honey, clove and belgian sugar. Taste is sweet, slightly yeast, but pretty mild overall with some spices and malts in the finish. A bit fizzy with the consistency of water over the tongue. A good belgian sipper in a nice resealable ceramic bottle.

Pretty, slightly volatile, nearly strong ale aroma. Looks very vanilla pale, almost cloudy. Has a bit of mild bitter bite but is for the most part a palatable friendly drink. Finish is nice, a little dull, but in a good way. Not quite as enjoyable as other wits, but still very nice.

Deep reddish brown ale with a thin white head. A sweet caramel aroma with notes of coriander, light molasses and evidence of oxydation, maderization. In mouth, sweet candy sugar with light orange peels, no alcohol, and madera. Not bad considering this may be passed its prime. Bottle at Vineyards, Spring 2007, 8.95$.
