Description
Brouwerij Sterkens has a particularly rich and very tasteful history. In 1651, the Sterkens family began to brew their own beer out of interest. In that time, they were local farmers with small amount of money to brew some quantities. As they were brewing, they wrote down every single detail of the recipes they made and the way they produced the beer. These notes were given from father to son, for generations on. When the family noticed that brewing beer gradually got more priority than working on the farm, they chose to professionalize the brewery and to fill out more quality beers. The delicious and spicy St. Sebastiaan and St. Paul beers were well appreciated in Belgium, what led to the fact that Brouwerij Sterkens was one of the first breweries who went abroad for exportation.

The current 14th generation of Brouwerij Sterkens have ensured that the beers of Sterkens are appreciated in more than 30 countries on all 5 continents. The Sterkens family is looking to the near future with a lot of enthousiasm and confidence, without forgetting the past. After all, Brouwerij Sterkens is still bottling their beers in distinctive and exceptional packaging.

Sterkens did stop with brewing and became a client brewer in 2008.

75 cl bottle - The presentation is nice in the ceramic bottle. It pours up a rich golden color with a thick, lingering head and excellent lacing. The aroma is sweet with mild hop notes. The flavor is very sweet (candi sugar?) with mild fruit notes. The body is medium and has a somewhat bubbly body. The finish has some mild hops. Overall while not complex, I found it to be very drinkable and enjoyable. I’m surprised it doesn’t rank a little higher.

Bottled (BB 09/2008)
Dark ruby color with decent tan head. Aroma of dried plums and dates mixed with weak cold coffee and menthol. Flavor is quite similar to aroma, lots of Christmasy fruits, semi-sweet with some spices (clove?). Hiding alcohol very well. (6/4/6/3/13 3.2(
Re-rated bottle BB 09/2008

A deep red beer with a huge brown head. The aroma has strong notes of berries, but also some hints of dust. The flavor is sweet malty and again with strong notes of berries, combined with cinnamon and hints of alcohol. The end is quite sweet.

11.2 oz bottle. Pours cloudy and chunky with yeast with a big but rapidly fading head. It has smells of citrus. I have to agree that it’s kind of bland. It’s not bad, but there’s nothing that wows me about it either. This one is a bit hard for me to right though because while I enjoy the occasional Blue Moon, I’m generally not a big fan of the citrusy wheat beer style.

Bottle. Very spicy, malty aroma. Dark chestnut colour. Flavour is also spicy. Mouthfeel seems a little thin. Peppery aftertaste. Very nice, actually.

(Bottle 33 cl) Clear chestnut brown with a warm reddish tint. Small, beige head. Roasted and very perfumy nose - must be about a ton of coriander in there. Slightly vinous, flavours of roasted malt and caramel. Dry, but not very hoppy finish. 291005
