Hypha Project
Contract Brewer in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada 🇨🇦
Over time, the group all went in various directions, a few ultimately started local breweries, others just continued to practice drinking beer. This project reunites three of us from those days and we want to access that community feeling again but bigger this time. We love well made beer and art that doesn't take itself too seriously, so that's what this is about, those two things and the people who feel connected to them.

On tap at Darby's, pours a clear pale blonde with a small white head. Aroma is pretty faint, with earthy dry hops, straw and biscuity malt. Flavour is dry, with earthy hops and dusty bready malt. Not the best clarity. Obviously it's pretty weak given the ABV, but I'd want much more clarity here. A little lame.

Poured from 473mL can. Hazed gold with small white head. Mild berry and citrus hops, malt has a feint hint of spelt. Nose is decent, taste falls slightly flat. Okay, especially for a 2.6%.

473mL can, pours a cloudy golden blonde with a small white head. Nose has a nice hop character, with piney and citrus hops, a hint of dankness, and crisp biscuity malt. Flavour is gently bitter, with citrus hops, light dankness, almost some tart pithy stone fruits, and some crisp biscuity malt. The hop character is a bit murky and earthy but pleasant enough. Okay.

Poured from 473mL can. Very lightly hazy blonde gold with small white head (thought it would be hazier). Citrus hops, hint of onion, light graininess. Seems like the cans are pretty inconsistent judging by the ratings. My experience was okay overall, but mid tier for my Hypha experience as a whole.

Looks like hazy IPA. Not much head. Smells like last year's citra crop...just fucking onions and sulphur and shit. Sucks when you've contracted for a fuckton of citra and the whole goddamn crop is absolute trash. So that makes the decision to waste the phantasm on a beer that is going to be dominated by citra a bit of an odd choice. On the palate, the balance is probably better. There's some juicy orange in there, but it's still fighting for share of palate with the citra.

Can from The Gull, North Vancouver
Pale blond colour, hazy. Very nice aroma, grapes, tropical fruits, pungent. Good body; it seems quite dry, but with a light sweet feeling too; crisp malt and, possibly, oats base, some creaminess, and then an explosion of tropical fruits, of zest, of dry white wine, a bit floral; good bitterness level too, balanced.
Excellent.

473ml can. Pours a hazy pale straw colour with a small, fizzy, short lived, white head that leaves spotty lacing. Tart, funky aroma of wheat malt, grapefruit, apricot, mango and faint coconut. Sweet fruity flavour of wheat malt, grapefruit, lemon rind, apricot and mango in a dry, tart, mild bitter finish. Light to medium body with a watery texture and average carbonation. Tasty and refreshing.

473 ml can. Pour a turbid opaque tawny colour with moderate head. Aromas of pithy orange and lupulin powder. Flavors of same. Just other hazy. I wish breweries would correctly label a a Hazy IPA, especially if in cans…

Pours with very good foam on a cloudy yellow body, density pretty good, lasting a little long but not too much long. Long. Very nice chalky papaya and honeydew melon on the nose, faint lemon zest, a bit of breadfruit. Taste is meaty hops, chewy sweet cabbage, ending rather wet. A bit of an awkward mix here, like that Olympics girl who burst out the gate and then fumbled at the first hurdle.

Can from The Gull, North Vancouver
Pale yellow colour, cloudy to murky. Aroma of white grapes. Oaty mouthfeel, creamy, good body but very little residual sweetness; quite good juice from the hops, it's tropical, fresh, not the classic nelson Sauvin I knew long time ago. Some astringency in the finish.
Good hop expression, but partially twisted by the chalkiness.
