Rich coffee, raisin, unmalted roasted barley, and tobacco nose. Clear cola, thick tan head with fair retention. Coffee flavor with only subtle hints of raisins. Layers of different roastiness spring forth upon warming. Some cola notes. Toasty! Charred grain finish with raisinet accents. Silky smooth. This is what I expect from a porter, true to style, very well done.

22 oz. bottle, sent from CooperEllis (thanks a lot, John), pours black with a small tan head. Aroma is very roasted, with high percentage bittersweet chocolate, dry cocoa, some toffee and some dark fruits. Flavour is quite roasted, with lots of dry cocoa powder dominating along with the roasted malts, and some mildly bitter coffee underneath. Not a huge flavour punch, with the dryness from the cocoa making this actually rather mellow and easy drinking. Well-made indeed, but there are much better chocolate imperial stouts out there (Choklat, Brooklyn Black Chocolate, etc.). Not tremendously complex or anything, but easy to drink. Very enjoyable, but short of the status it enjoys on ratebeer, in my opinion.

12 ounce bottle from Beer Run. Pours a clear copper color with a medium sized fizzy tan head. Average head retention. Aroma of vibrant spices including ginger, some citrus, pumpkin and a mild glue note. The taste is earth, pumpkin, cinnamon, ginger, doughy malts and a tart finish. Medium bodied. Nice beer.

Grainy and floral, grass, dandelion, and lillies on the nose. Clear yellow, medium sticky head. Flavor is lightly sweet, slightly vegetal, tinny. Grass is dominant, but lesser floral notes remain. Alcohol is fairly evident. I may be being too hard on pilsners lately, but this pilsner, while enjoyable, was lacking a certain clean quality I look for in this style.

Bottle: Poured a pitch-black color stout with a medium size foamy head with good retention and some light lacing. Aroma of bourbon and dry bitter black chocolate is quite interesting. Aroma of medium bourbon notes with some pretty dry and bitter black chocolate notes makes for an interesting drink. Light butterscotch notes could also be detected and I wish more notes of vanilla could be found here. Body is pretty full with a good creamy texture and good carbonation with no apparent alcohol. I could see myself having this again.

Bottle. Beer of the month club. Hazy deep golden-orange color with a medium white head. Nice hoppy aroma with citrus and pine needles and a bit of cookie-ish malt. Flavor has some sweet maltiness and a lingering piney and grapefruity hops bitterness. Medium-bodied. Very pleasant.

Bottle. Beer of the month club. Hazy yellow color with a big frothy white head. Aroma has some floral and grassy hops, some overripe fruits, yeasty notes, some pale malt and light graininess. Flavor starts sweetish with some graininess and fruitiness and continues drier with light yeasty notes and a moderately bitter finish with spicy, grassy hops notes. Light to medium-bodied with too much carbonation. OK.

22 oz. bottle, courtesy of and split with (!) Glouglouburp (thanks Dany). Pours black with a small light brown head. Aroma of bourbon barrels upfront, some oxidation (? - it's not older than a year), and some bittersweet dark cocoa that is overwhelmed by the barrels. Flavour is quite wooden and bourbon oak heavy, a bit of oxidation again (no idea how this happened), almost no chocolate left, finishing on a sludgy coal-like finish. Quite oaky and boozy, with some burnt, charred notes leaving the lasting impression. Seems this is either a bad batch, bad bottle, or hugely overrated.
