Description
Bereits seit über 475 Jahren wird hier am ehemaligen Steinweg, einer alten, überregional bedeutenden Handelsstraße, Bier gebraut. Eine der letzten von zu Beginn des 19. Jahrhunderts in der Straße noch nachweisbaren 22 Brauereien ist die Brauerei Spezial. Das Anwesen der Brauerei Spezial in der Oberen Königstraße 10 gilt als idealtypisches Beispiel für einen Braubetrieb des 16. Jahrhunderts.

Als Begründer der Braustätte gilt nach einer Urkunde aus dem Jahr 1536 der Büttner Linhard Großkopf, dessen Familie zu dieser Zeit noch mehrere weitere Braustätten am Steinweg besitzt. Der Name „Spezial“ taucht erstmals in Verbindung mit dem ehemaligen Besitzer Nikolas Delscher auf, der „Spicial genannt, eyn Bräuer und auch Büttner gewesten ist“. Er betreibt die Brauereigaststätte von 1631 bis zu seinem Tod im Jahr 1664. Seit 1898 ist die Brauerei Spezial im Besitz der Familie Merz. Der Braumeister Christian Merz führt das Unternehmen also bereits in der 4. Generation.

Clear amber with an off-white head. Aroma is sweet, malty and rather smoky - bacon. Flavor is medium sweet and moderate bitter. Dry and moderate bitter finish. 221211

Bottle. Nice creamy head with good duration. Color is amber. Aroma and taste are bacon, sausage, smoke, malt, caramel and hops. Smooth palate.

Bottled 500ml. -from some random shop in Bamberg. Clear amber coloured, small off-white head, light smokey nose. Smokey malty, light caramel and pancetta with mild woody notes. Simple and pleasant smoked beer.

Croatian November ’11 RB tasting, Ogi’s bottle, found in Bamberg. Nice coppery amber body, small off white head. Sweet smokey, malty nose. Nice smooth pancetta malty smokey taste, light hop, sl. (something else), slightly grainy. Light aftertaste. Expected it to be better, but it’s still very good stuff.

Aroma has lots of smoke and some dunkel-like bready malt. Flavour has bready malt and some smoke that disappeared when I had done half of the pint. After that I had only a Dunkel in my glass.

Bottle from brewery. Red-brown color with huge frothy beige head. Aroma of caramel and smoke. Taste, caramel, malt, wood, smoked sausage, but not very intensive. Light bitterness in finish. Nice.

Bottle from brewery. Cooper-golden color with medium white head. Strongly smokey aroma with malty hints. Taste, strongly caramel which is later on followed by pleasant bacon like smokiness. Nice.

Beer No. 110 on my tour through Austria, Germany and Denmark.
Draught at the brewpub. Pale amber coloured, medium sized off-white head, smoke and malt in the nose. Light roasted malt, smoke and some toffee with pretty short fruity smokey finish. Lager was a bit better.

Beer No. 109 on my tour through Austria, Germany and Denmark.
Draught at the brewpub. Dark golden coloured, small to medium sized off-white head, smoked cheese in the nose. Moderate malty and pleasant hoppy with nice smoked notes and hint of caramel. Very nice and enjoyable rauchbier.

Slightly hazy orange copper beer, fluffy firm white creamy head. Aroma rather smoky, sweet malty. Caramel and wood smoke accents. Spicy. Flavour bit sweet, roasted malts. Mocha, fruity, yeast. Bit thin body. Somewhat astringent with some bitterness coming through. Finish dry, bit bitter and slightly sweet.
