Description
Menabrea is the oldest active brewery in Italy. A top premium brewery, given the melding of three elements: An original beer recipe, quality raw materials and an inherent beer culture.

Birra Menabrea is part of the history of beer in Italy. Founded in 1846 by Mr. Welf di Gressoney and the brothers Antonio and Gian Battista Caraccio, in 1854 the brewery was rented to Giuseppe Menabrea and Antonio Zimmermann, who bought it in 1864. Following the exit of Zimmermann from the company, it was Giuseppe Menabrea who set up the 6 July 1872 "G. Menabrea and sons". At the head of the brewery is Carlo Menabrea until, in 1896, the company passed into the hands of Emilio Thedy and Augusto Antoniotti, husbands of the Menabrea sisters. From that moment on, the Thedy family will lead the company.

In 1991, the company became part of the Forst Beer Group. However, Birra Menabrea retains its strong identity and independence intact. Since 2005 the director is Franco Thedy, the fifth descendant of the family. In 2017, Franco Thedy gave the go-ahead for the expansion of the Brewhouse with advanced features and a spectacular visual impact. Inauguration is scheduled for March 2019.

66cl bottle, 5.2%, 1.90€. Wonderful red color with a big smooth offwhite head. Quiet nose. Aroma is roasted malts, some caramel and syrup. Taste sweetish, salty with a soft bitter end. Sticky lips, light to medium body, average carbonation. Nice one for an italian industrial product.

Smells malty. A decent dose of hops. Pours amber. A little bitter aftertaste. Medium hops. Beer actually grows on me. Some sweetness.

Not much flavor, a little spicy, but not much. Nutty brown and reddish in color with a white head.

Fra fat på fortausrestaurant i Livorno: en kjærkommen tørsteslukker etter å ha tatt lokaltoget tilbake fra Firenze. Kaldt og forfriskende, men helt uten særpreg eller mersmak.

First U.S. rate. 750mL bottle poured into a large white wine glass. The only reason I purchased this beer is because there are no ratings for it or the 3.5 version. I picked this up at the Wine & Cheese Place in StL, can it be that it was the only store to get these beers? The best aspect of this beer is the presentation starting with the bottle. Its an original 750mL shaped bottle, its embossed, decorated cap, what else can one ask for. The pour is nice, thick head, dark chestnut colored body. If beer was all about presentation then we got ourselves a winner. Unfortunately, I have more than one sense. The rest of it is your generic Euro dark lager. The nose is starting to turn just a little sour, probably age at this point. A slightly sweet lager, pretty light, leafy, metallic, meh.

Dobry wiedeński styl, choć spodziewałem się sporo lepszego piwa nie zawiodłem się. Mogło by być trochę bardziej wyraziste w smaku.

Fra fat på fortauskafe i Livorno: kald pils på fortauskafe i Middelhavets varme og atmosfære er aldri galt, og den tynne smaken gjør den lettdrikkelig. Innslag av mais = tynn, billig smak.
