Description
In 1999 the brewery was established in the ''Commanderie van St. Jan'' in Nijmegen. This 12th century monastery has since been our production location and also the place where beer has been drunk most for years. In Brouwerscafé De Hemel, the 12 taps are always filled with different brewes from Hemel. Beer production takes place in the cellars of the Commanderie.

500ml swing op bottle, thanks to Secret Santa. Dark blonde color, mostly clear. Firm off white head with reasonable retention. Aroma’s of grain, malts, (sour) fruit. Sweet malts, sour fruit, grain and spices (ginger, possibly anise) retronasal. Flavor is moderate sweet, caramellish, a bit herbal spicy. Medium bodied. Finishes rather dry and herbal with moderate bitterness. Not shocking but well crafted.

50 cl swingtop bottle thanks to secret Santa. Amber to light red-brown color. Dense, off-white head. Aroma’s: malt-sweet, light smoke. Retronasal the aroma is more outspoken: caramel sweetness, smoke, some red fruit. Flavor is light sweet, light smoky, light bitter. Medium bodied. Finish is light roasted, light bitter. Nothing extreme, but flavorful enough and well crafted.

Clear amber colour, white head. Quite floral aroma, fruity hops, sweat, hashish, honey and pine. Light bitter flavour, quite sweet, fruity hops. Refreshing. Finish hops, tropical fruit drink, pilsner malts. Quite light in alcohol, it’s well hidden. Nice beer. There seems to be some confusion about the ABV, on the sighn in the pub it was denoted as 6% alcohol, online it’s noted as 7.5%.

330ml bottle [2009 vintage]. Slightly cloudy, dark amber colour with late awakening, minimally lacing, off-white layer. Relatively flat, malty aroma has hints of toffee, a touch of red and dried fruit. Taste is moderately sweet fruity, malty, hints of dried apricot, plum, raisin, a bitter hoppy note, also a tart fruit acid touch; a mild warming alcohol note in the finish. Relatively light for its high abv.

Tap @ Winterbierfestival Gouda: Clear amber with massive head. Cinnamon candy. Lots of it. Some medium roasted malts too. Taste is sweet, with bitter touch and minimal acidic at the end. Very dry, medium carbonation. Pretty one-dimensional.
