Description
In 1999 the brewery was established in the ''Commanderie van St. Jan'' in Nijmegen. This 12th century monastery has since been our production location and also the place where beer has been drunk most for years. In Brouwerscafé De Hemel, the 12 taps are always filled with different brewes from Hemel. Beer production takes place in the cellars of the Commanderie.

On tap at PWBF ’14. Clear golden amber colour, off white head. Aroma of spice, mainly cinnamon, smells like ontbijtkoek. Flavour is medium-sweet, malty, watery, cinnamon, clove, earth, light-bitter finish. Light-bodied, watery. Listed at 7.0% ABV. It’s certainly not 8.5%.

Bottle. Pours a hazy amber orange with an orange head that starts at the edges and dissipates completely. Aroma has lots of caramel and grain notes with a bit of backing toffee. Flavor has a good amount of toffee and grain with hint of warming alcohol and just a touch of caramel.

On tap at Drie Dorstige Herten. Hazy deep golden colour, white head. Aroma of foul grain, swamp, dishrag, some soft sweet spices. It stinks IMHO. Flavour is medium-sweet, alcohol, spices, skunk, grainy texture, floral notes, yeast. Medium-bodied. Disappointing.

Ordinary witbier. Wheaty body, with the usual adding of orange peel and coriander. Quite similar to Hoegaarden.

A hoppy, herbal and overall quite average tripel. The bottle is different, that’s something.

I expected more from this one. The beer is quite flat and the taste quickly disappears.
