Šušvės Midus (UAB Lietuviškas Midus)
Meadery in Kėdainių, Kaunas County, Lithuania 🇱🇹
Established in 2015
The founder of the company is a third-generation beekeeper, to whom the beekeeping traditions were passed on by his grandfather and mother. At the moment, we have our own apiary, where 200 beehives lick. Mead was already made by my grandfather, my mother, from whom I took over the secrets of mead cooking. In 2015, it opened its doors as the only producers of traditional mead in the country.
Our family is located in Kėdainiai district, Plinkaigalis village, on the shore of Šušvė, next to the famous Plinkaigalis mound and iron age cemetery. According to archaeologists in our country, mead was already known and drunk during various holidays and rites in prehistoric times. So, continuing the old traditions of the country, using my mother's experience, my knowledge, I founded a mead brewery. Mead is a natural fermentation, unspirited alcoholic beverage. All our mead is made from our bee honey , so we can always ensure high mead quality. When cooking mead honey, we do not regret – each litre of mead contains up to 750gr. of honey. We do not use any chemical additives in production, only natural raw materials (small amounts of sulphites in the composition occur spontaneously during the manufacturing process).
We ripen mead for at least 1 year, some species of mead ripen at least 3 years. Mead color, taste, smell is given by the main ingredient- honey. Matured mead tastes noble, uninconstruedly sweet, full. We pour our mead into bottles of original design, the corks are covered with natural beeswax, so the aroma spreads even without opening the bottle. This drink is recommended as a great gift or souvenir from Lithuania.

Bottle at home. Pours clear golden. Sweet honey aroma with undertones of heather and spices. Smooth and well balanced honey flavour without being too sweet or alcohol forward. Solid mead.

Pours a very dark garnet. Scent is fruity, but not as loud as the raspberry version. Honey seems a bit lost. Taste is full, sweet, honey funk (glad to see some balance) , loads of fruityness, especially contributing an acidity that works very well. Gentle yet powerfull. Not as masterfully made as some of the US based meaderies, but this is definately US style, and definately not a failure.

Pours a dark, fairly unclear browned amber. Scent is raspberry puree, not very natural, jam-like , with a lot of herbal (unripe) qualities to it. Taste is full, intense honey, but fully overpowered by the jammy raspberry. If you ever wished to be drinking jams, this would be your perfect drink ! For me ( as a big raspberry fan ) this is unbalanced though, and for once i'd like less raspberry in the mead, or at least a different aspect of raspberry's - such as the american meaderies use.

Pours a darkened, clear copper. Scent is full, very funky honey, mild florality, but not as 'fresh' floral as I had hoped, has almost an ice-tea aspect to it, appart from the big honey profile. Taste is full, sweet, sharp bitterness by the flowers, noticable alcohol, body feels thick, yet sharp, which is a weird combo. On the fence about this one.

Pours a darker ocergold to copper. Scent is heavy on honey, tad medicinal like perhaps, a note of cloves. Taste is full, sweet, fairly thick mouthfeel. Spicy honey, funk, some clove, mild bitter touch ( weird for a basic mead) . Bit drying trough the intensity of the sugars. Not as melow and smooth as I generally like - but not bad.
