Bottle, courtesy of the brewery. A black to dark brown beer topped by a dense, finger-thick light tan head. Cute lacing, but the head isn't of the long-lived kind. Guess almond and cocoa beans don't do wonders for head retention. The first impression of the aroma is alcohol and almonds, but those scents are soon joined by cocoa, roasted malts, coffee hints and a touch of raspberry. Personally I'd like more focus on the raspberry, at least in the flavor, where it's far from reaching the levels expected in the chocolate bar or the homemade version of that. The flavor is more focused on the malts and cocoa though, with the cocoa having a strong presence in the finish. Almond, roasted malts, coffee, dark chocolate, some generic dark dried fruits and of course some alcohol too. It's full-bodied, warming and smooth on the palate, sweet but not cloying, and even though it adds a thin coating in the roof of the mouth, it feels sort of dry in the very end. So, was the brewer successful in accomplishing the task given by the name of the beer? Well, there's sure the elements, but at least the raspberry could be more pronounced, and I wouldn't mind more focus on the chocolate either, but it's sure a good example of liquid confectionary. Share the bottle with a friend, or spend quite some time on your own. 201102

Bottle, courtesy of the brewery. It's a dark one, as the name suggests, close to black, but more brown really. The foam top is dark beige in color, and doesn't last very long. Looks good when present though. The aroma has a good dash of tonka, that spiced, vanilla-ish blend you'll recognize quickly if you've had it before. Roasted malts, coffee and dark chocolate showing up too. It's got a good body for a beer this strength, with a pleasant carbonation level. It has sweetness, but it's far from cloying, and feels much drier in the finish. The flavor too has a good dash of tonka, vanilla and cinnamon and even cardamom springs to mind, with great support from dark chocolate, dark roasted malts and coffee flavors. Some bitterness shows up in the finish, still with the tonka present. Overall, a beer that both tastes well and has a Christmas-y touch. Nice. 201028
