Description
Crux is a crossroads, an intersection, the heart of something. In brewing it's that pivotal point where fermentation happens and anticipation mounts.

We’re Crux Fermentation Project— housed in a former AAMCO Transmission Plant and inspired by our location right in the heart of Bend, Oregon. Our brewery is a one-of-a-kind, built for non-traditional brewing methods like decoction mashing, open fermentation and barrel aging, and for leveraging the limitless possibilities that wild yeast strains and experimental hops present.

Citrusy nose, Smells like a pale ale. Looks and tastes like a zwickel. Rather stronger than the usual kellerbier. Malty with a hop tinge

Hazy golden coloured body with a light orange glow and a nice, three centimetre tall soapy tan head. Aroma of bright citrus and lightly floral hops with some malt noticeable and a fairly light aroma consisting mainly of perfume and flowers. Medium-bodied; Good balance of hops and malt and a very light style with some caramel and a hint of honey noticeable - nice and easy to drink. Aftertaste shows the floral and perfumey hops with only a hint of sweetness and body to show for it. Overall, a very nice beer with a smooth, easy-to-drink body and a lot of hop flavours to balance out the light malt. A nice first sample from this brewery! I sampled this 50 cL bottle purchased thirty minutes ago at Pearl Specialty Market in Portland, Oregon for US$4.74 sampled in my hotel room here in Portland on 27-September-2013.

Bottle from Belmont Station. Pours dark ruddy copper with slight, transient, tannish head. Aroma of medium dark stone fruit - rather plummy. Med + body. Mild carb. Flavor is very prune with some yeast/spice. For me it’s a dubble trying to be a quad. Extremely tasty with the pluminess. Finishes more dry than not, tho there’s a good bit of malt involved.

12.7 oz. bottle, pours a pitch black like motor oil with a small light brown head. Aroma brings out loads of wood upfront, followed by roasted malt, bourbon, and bittersweet chocolate - very complex. Flavour is heavily roasted, woody and bourbony, with loads of roasted malt, a little rye, oak, and a moderate-to-high bourbon presence. Everything is wonderfully in unison with none of the elements overbearing. Though this is still a big 'n bold woody bourbon bomb. Velvety and rich on the palate, with a dry chocolate, woody and bourbony finish. Excellent stuff.

Bottle from Belmont Station. Bottle capped and also with a cork. Pours very black with a slight dark tan head. Aroma is mixed fruits, burnt dark malt, and a hint of heat. Med + body. Flavor is alcoholic mixed fruits with some chocolate and perhaps a bit of coffee. There’s a lot going on with this, and it’s pretty darn tasty. Finishing with heat in the gullet, mixed light and dark fruits, and chocolate/coffee and burnt malt. It is very pleasant.

From a growler from the Bend brewery. Deep orange amber with a persistent thin skin of a head. Soft sweet malty aroma with a little hops but not really the classic citrus or pine. Taste was decidedly tame. Lacking the big bitter hop flavor. Certainly for a double. I would ahve been hard pressed to believe it was even a "single" IPA. Pleasant and tasty but mild and tame and not even close to a DIPA

Hot and heavy with the Bourbon. I like the dark fruits and roasted malt that add a bitter and sweet aspect but again, it is HOT! 3.86 on BA.

375ml waxed and corked bottle bought from an online store. Man, that is one super stubborn cork; it took me a few minutes to finally pull it out.

A- a small pop when the cork got the hell out of Dodge, it pours a pitch black with about an inch of tan foam with good lacing.

S- big roasted malt, bourbon, coffee, a bit of dark fruit.

T- roasted malt and bourbon up front, light coffee, and then it gets very sweet and hot. Every bit of the 11.5% is there! I get hints of dark fruits like raisins & plums from time to time and the bourbon seems to grow with every sip. There is some light bitterness here but the sweet notes dominate.

M- full bodied, light carbonation, the mouthfeel is fine.

O- I reckon some cellaring would calm things down but as is, it’s tasty but hot and a very slow drinker. I like it.

Draft at APEX in Portland, OR on 3 June 2013. Poured a hazy dark golden colour with a white head. Citrus and grassy aroma with hints of spice. Yeasty ester flavours with notes of orange peal and cloves. Nice rounded biscuity palate.
