Cask at Haymarket. I remember not being too impressed by the bottle I had in my pre-rating days. Much better on cask. Clear amber pour, thick white head. Taste is fruity sweet. There’s a subtle whisky note at the back end. Nice.

Cask at Haymarket, as The Solution, but seems to be the same beer from the description. Pours brown with a nice off-white head. Aromas are dark fruit and chocolate. Got more chocolate on the taste. Big, rich mouthfeel. Nice.

Bottle. Dark amber in colour, next to no head. The toffee is evident in both aroma and taste but it’s on the skunky side. There’s a small sweetness in the palate.

Bright amber. Aroma is very sweet and bubblegummy. Palate is a bit more balanced, but still quite a bit sweeter than I would like. Braggot benefits from letting the honey ferment out all the way, leaving a stronger but better-balanced beer.

Keg @ The Rake. I really need to take more notes when I go out to these places. All I can remember is this tasted great, the rye really taking a back seat to those hops and a good bracing bitterness.

Bottle at home, bought some time ago at Tesco’s. Pours a slightly hazy orange-amber. Quite flat with minimal carb/head. Smells of pilsner malt (?) and faint grassy/grape hop. Taste starts bittersweet with a surprisingly bitter finish. Verdict: like others have said this is not an IPA, but neither is it a standard UK bitter dressing itself up as an IPA. I find it almost reminiscent of an aromatically hopped Vienna Red. Intriguing, and I appreciate Brains pushing the boat out (and what a great name!) but this isn’t for me.

Keg at the Rake. It pours deep ruby-brown with a medium light tan head. The nose is toasty, roasted malt, weak coffee and mild acidity. The taste is crisp, lightly tart, roast, somewhat watery, some acidity, ash, coffee, burnt notes, cocoa and resin with a dry finish. Medium body and fine, prickly carbonation. Alright, but just not that exciting. Lacks a bit of depth. OK.
