Description
Our story began back in 2009, Old Dominion Brewing Company had been brewing and serving craft beers in Loudoun County Virginia since ‘89 and was a beloved fixture in the county. However, in 2009 the company had been bought by AB InBev and later relocated their operation to Delaware, which of course left a large void in the local craft beer community. During this transition, Matt Hagerman, Lost Rhino’s founder, had managed to purchase some of Old Dominion’s brewing equipment, including its 25 barrel brewhouse and started getting together a business plan. By starting his own adventure in brewing, he would also help bring the spirit of craft beer back into Loudoun County. Since Matt had been a brewer at Old Dominion, and knew exactly what he needed to make this goal a reality. So he found his own space, set up the brewhouse, fermentors, brite tanks and not too long after in 2011, began brewing some of our first and most beloved brands: New River Pale Ale, Rhino Chasers Pilsner, and Face Plant India Pale Ale right here in Loudoun.

Nowadays, Lost Rhino has grown quite a bit since it’s founding, but we have never lost sight of our love for the craft. In the brew house, we take pride in bringing classic styles and local flavor in all of our beers. Everything we craft is personal; we thrive on choosing the scenic route, the tough challenge, the road less traveled.

It’s time to Get Lost!

Draft at the brewery. Pours a clear vibrant copper color with a medium sized frothy tan head. Decent head retention. Aroma of pale malt and spicy hops. The taste is spicy, herbal hops, faint caramel malts. Medium bodied, well balanced. 50th imperial pils rating!

22oz bomber I picked up at the brewer. The idea is this is an India Pale Lager. I’m on board. Pours a hazy orange with some thin, lacing white head. Nose is interesting, some yeast, a lot of pith, orange rind, grapefruit rind, some grass, lemon. Flavor follow suit, a lot of citrus pith, orange, lemon, grapefruit, some sweetness, almost a little corn sweetness, some pine, soap. Herbal, pithy finish. Good, a little messy, but good.

Poured from a 64oz growler. Poured a hazy, orange-light amber color with an almost non-existent head. Can see some big carbonation stick to the sides of the poured beer. Aroma was light sweetness, almost candy apples, touch of light malts. Flavor is sweet, almost apple like, malts. Sweet. I’d be fascinated to know what VA ingredients were used.

32oz growler I picked up at the brewery. Pours a hazy, caramel amber with some fast fading white head. Nose is fairly mild, some muddled sweetness, a little brown sugar, apple. Flavor is has much more fruit, lots of apple dried apple slices, malt, some sweet breakfast bread. Slightly sweet finish. A fairly standard amber, nothing to go nuts over.

32oz growler from the brewery. Pours a hazy, cola brown with some creamy white head. Nose is very mild, some cracker, brown sugar, light bread. Flavor is similar, bready, malt, some mild spice, some brown sugar. Watery finish. Not a whole lot to this.

64oz growler from the brewery. I really wanted not to like this. Pours a cloudy orange with some creamy, white head. Nose is very bright, not what you’d expect from a wheat ale, bright orange, starfruit, a little mango, a little grass. Flavor is solid too, sweet, a little light bubblegum, pine apple, star fruit, pear, orange. Crisp finish. Pretty good.

64oz growler from the brewery pours a hazy, dark honey amber with some creamy, white head. Grainy nose, honey, cracker, bread, dried corn, grass. Flavor is the same, sweet, malty, toasted grain, some fruit, honey, grass, straw. Crisp finish. Not reinventing the wheel, but pretty solid.
