Description
Our story began back in 2009, Old Dominion Brewing Company had been brewing and serving craft beers in Loudoun County Virginia since ‘89 and was a beloved fixture in the county. However, in 2009 the company had been bought by AB InBev and later relocated their operation to Delaware, which of course left a large void in the local craft beer community. During this transition, Matt Hagerman, Lost Rhino’s founder, had managed to purchase some of Old Dominion’s brewing equipment, including its 25 barrel brewhouse and started getting together a business plan. By starting his own adventure in brewing, he would also help bring the spirit of craft beer back into Loudoun County. Since Matt had been a brewer at Old Dominion, and knew exactly what he needed to make this goal a reality. So he found his own space, set up the brewhouse, fermentors, brite tanks and not too long after in 2011, began brewing some of our first and most beloved brands: New River Pale Ale, Rhino Chasers Pilsner, and Face Plant India Pale Ale right here in Loudoun.
Nowadays, Lost Rhino has grown quite a bit since it’s founding, but we have never lost sight of our love for the craft. In the brew house, we take pride in bringing classic styles and local flavor in all of our beers. Everything we craft is personal; we thrive on choosing the scenic route, the tough challenge, the road less traveled.

Whole lemon, lemongrass, funk, and wheat. Murky rose, like blood plasma, medium lacy head. Sweet apricot, pomegranate, lemon flavor. Nicely balanced, tangy, medium body, good texture. I was very skeptical at first, but this is lovely.

Draft and then later a growler from the brewery. Like I say for most small beers I’ve had, it’s good for what it is - the second runnings of a stronger beer. Clear amber pour, with a white head. Flavor is mild light grains, malts. Highly sessionable brew.

Draft at Mad Fox Brewing’s 3rd Annual Barleywine Festival. Poured a relatively clear medium-medium/dark amber color with a small off-white head. Aroma was toffee notes, citrus character was pretty present here - malt character was different than the other barley wines I had there. Pretty enjoyable, no overt booze noticeable here.

Draft from the brewery. Grabbed a 12oz pour while getting my growler filled with a different beer. This one poured a slightly hazy golden color with a foamy medium sized white head. Aroma was really mild, somewhat sweet, grain notes to this too. Alcohol is really well masked, leading me to think that it wasn’t actually 9%, though I got the delayed sensation of alcohol minutes later.

Pizzeria Paradiso, Georgetown cask: Pours black with a tan head. Aroma is a wee bit of bourbon, chocolate, and a bunch of coffee. Taste is slightly sweet, with some bitterness. The aging is barely noticeable to the point that I didn’t even seek it out until I read it should have been there. It ain’t nothing against the beer though. Pretty good.
