Description
Our story began back in 2009, Old Dominion Brewing Company had been brewing and serving craft beers in Loudoun County Virginia since ‘89 and was a beloved fixture in the county. However, in 2009 the company had been bought by AB InBev and later relocated their operation to Delaware, which of course left a large void in the local craft beer community. During this transition, Matt Hagerman, Lost Rhino’s founder, had managed to purchase some of Old Dominion’s brewing equipment, including its 25 barrel brewhouse and started getting together a business plan. By starting his own adventure in brewing, he would also help bring the spirit of craft beer back into Loudoun County. Since Matt had been a brewer at Old Dominion, and knew exactly what he needed to make this goal a reality. So he found his own space, set up the brewhouse, fermentors, brite tanks and not too long after in 2011, began brewing some of our first and most beloved brands: New River Pale Ale, Rhino Chasers Pilsner, and Face Plant India Pale Ale right here in Loudoun.
Nowadays, Lost Rhino has grown quite a bit since it’s founding, but we have never lost sight of our love for the craft. In the brew house, we take pride in bringing classic styles and local flavor in all of our beers. Everything we craft is personal; we thrive on choosing the scenic route, the tough challenge, the road less traveled.

5oz taster glass at the brewery. Poured a cloudy dark brown color (not quite cola colored, but close) with a small off-white head. Aroma is sweet candy sugars and malts. Flavor is sweet, malted notes, with some dry honey character. Actually pretty refreshing for 9% ABV. Enjoyed this one.

5oz taster glass at the brewery. Poured a hazy yellow color with a small off-white head that dissipated quickly. Still not too sure about this one. The initial sip wasn’t really to my liking, enough that I had to set it down and stare at it. I got some spice character, some yeast character and something I can only really describe as bubblegum. Odd. Additional sips were better, but was hoping for a bit more rye and spice characters to come out in this one - it was a bit too odd wheat/yeast for my liking.

On tap at Rustico Alexandria, full pour. Poured a light pink color, slight haze to it and a off-white head. Aroma is light pomegranate, sweet floral notes, and some light sweet malt. Flavor is pretty good, nice and refreshing - some spice character to it, with a tasty fruit character.

Ridiculously large five to six centimetre tall perfectly tan head on top of a deep copper and bronze clear coloured body - strong and very dark for the style. Aroma of alcohol, resin, pine, citrus, grapefruit, oranges and a lot of rich malts. Full-bodied; Super deep malt notes show at first, with a lot of sweetness, candy sugar, fructose with a pungent grassy and very citrusey bitterness with perhaps more alcohol flavours than even a 9,5 per cent abv beer should show - this is pungent, but the resinous, dark notes and even stronger. Aftertaste shows more punch and sweetness than the initial tastes with some lingering honey and pure alcohol flavours and not much in terms of hops, complexity or anything nuanced at all. Overall, a very strong and pungent real Imperial IPA that doesn't hide it's astringency or sweetness - this is abrasive and brash and not worth going out to try and find. Others from Lost Rhino are much better - this is just too much and not mitigated properly. I sampled this sixteen ounce, pint-sized can, purchased from Costco in Arlington (Pentagon City), Virginia on 03-May-2020 for US$2,99 sampled at my house here in Washington, a few blocks away, on 06-May-2020, just three days later.
