Description
Our story began back in 2009, Old Dominion Brewing Company had been brewing and serving craft beers in Loudoun County Virginia since ‘89 and was a beloved fixture in the county. However, in 2009 the company had been bought by AB InBev and later relocated their operation to Delaware, which of course left a large void in the local craft beer community. During this transition, Matt Hagerman, Lost Rhino’s founder, had managed to purchase some of Old Dominion’s brewing equipment, including its 25 barrel brewhouse and started getting together a business plan. By starting his own adventure in brewing, he would also help bring the spirit of craft beer back into Loudoun County. Since Matt had been a brewer at Old Dominion, and knew exactly what he needed to make this goal a reality. So he found his own space, set up the brewhouse, fermentors, brite tanks and not too long after in 2011, began brewing some of our first and most beloved brands: New River Pale Ale, Rhino Chasers Pilsner, and Face Plant India Pale Ale right here in Loudoun.
Nowadays, Lost Rhino has grown quite a bit since it’s founding, but we have never lost sight of our love for the craft. In the brew house, we take pride in bringing classic styles and local flavor in all of our beers. Everything we craft is personal; we thrive on choosing the scenic route, the tough challenge, the road less traveled.

Draft at the brewpub. Pours a clear golden color with a thin white head. Poor head retention. Aroma of grassy hops, green apple and a tinny note. The taste is grassy hops, corn and pale malts. Medium bodied. Drinkable enough, but not a terribly great pilsner.

A lightly hazed golden ale with a light mocha head. In aroma, a sweet fruity caramel malt with smooth floral hops. In mouth, an oily grainy malt with a good dose of piney hops, a bit of astringence, unbalanced. On tap at Time Out Wings, Herndon, VA, Oct. 12 2012.

Consumed on premise - 5oz taster. Poured a light hazy orange color with a small white head. Aroma was plenty of citrus notes, some grassy character. Crisp flavor, some grapefruit, orange citrus, with some herbal notes. Very clean, refreshing brew. Wouldn’t have expected this to have been a lager (not because they’re bad but because it strikes me as an IPA more than anything else).

Consumed on premise - 5oz taster. This one poured a clear amber color with a medium sized off-white head. Aroma was resin, sweet tropical fruit notes (grapefruit and mango). This one was pretty freaking tasty - mango notes through and through - grapefruits. Alcohol was relatively masked while consuming but soon after cheeks and forehead started to warm a bit - it’s there but I don’t feel like I have to avoid open flames while consuming. Bottle this, please.

From growler I got Saturday and drank Sunday. Poured a slightly clear hazy amber color with a small off-white head. Aroma was sweet citrus hops on the nose, with a sweet malt character to it. Flavor was sweet malt character, with a solid hop aroma and a nice malty finish.
