Description
Our story began back in 2009, Old Dominion Brewing Company had been brewing and serving craft beers in Loudoun County Virginia since ‘89 and was a beloved fixture in the county. However, in 2009 the company had been bought by AB InBev and later relocated their operation to Delaware, which of course left a large void in the local craft beer community. During this transition, Matt Hagerman, Lost Rhino’s founder, had managed to purchase some of Old Dominion’s brewing equipment, including its 25 barrel brewhouse and started getting together a business plan. By starting his own adventure in brewing, he would also help bring the spirit of craft beer back into Loudoun County. Since Matt had been a brewer at Old Dominion, and knew exactly what he needed to make this goal a reality. So he found his own space, set up the brewhouse, fermentors, brite tanks and not too long after in 2011, began brewing some of our first and most beloved brands: New River Pale Ale, Rhino Chasers Pilsner, and Face Plant India Pale Ale right here in Loudoun.
Nowadays, Lost Rhino has grown quite a bit since it’s founding, but we have never lost sight of our love for the craft. In the brew house, we take pride in bringing classic styles and local flavor in all of our beers. Everything we craft is personal; we thrive on choosing the scenic route, the tough challenge, the road less traveled.

Definitely at the top for an apa. Great balance. Light hop aroma with a hop/herbal/citrus flavor with an excellent palate and low bitterness.

Bottle Pours a hazy golden amber with a meium sized white creamy head. Thin clingy wispy lacing. Aroma has the hops on the front. But note of sweet malts as well. Makes me think of an IPA. Falvore is not nearly as hopy as I anticipated. Sweet pale malts are the main player and very mild grain flavors are complimented by the slight bitterness. Very smooth and soft feel. Just the right amount of modest carbonation. Slightly bitter paper or cardboard aftertaste. All in all a wonderfull Pale Ale

Sampled at From The Vine beer tasting Jan 14th, 2005: Light amber color with a medium off-white head and good lacing. Fairly hoppy aroma with a pinch of malt. Medium-bodied and well-rounded with a decent amount of hops taste, as well as sweet malt and citrus. The finish is earthy and short with the bitterness disappearing quickly. Overall a well-made beer whose only real shortcoming is being so straightforward it really is not memorable.

2004 bottle. Good enough amber-orange color, with large bubbles and a small off-white head. No haziness, and didnt see any sediment in the bottom. Aroma of light citrus, honey, caramel, and some very dry papery notes from the pale malts and hops. Flavor is juicy and hoppy, with a good medium malt backbone, mostly caramel and some light bready notes. Medium body, waxes a bit too thin, with light honey notes lingering. Powerful citrus and overly sweet caramel tend to duke it out throughout. A bit filtered tasting, less complex than I was hoping for, but very drinkable nonetheless. Low carbonation for the bottle. A very wild ride through the palate, but I’ll reiterate that the flavors are somewhat monotonous. I don’t know why, but no APA has ever been able to replace SNPA for me.
Rerate Trying it a couple more times sure did the trick. Served wel-chilled, I actually preferred. Fantastic yeast interplay with the malt and a wel-rounded, flavorful, juicy hops presence. Medium, drinkable body and plenty of character as it warms. Must get more of this!

Bottle. Clear golden amber with a small white head. Nice aroma of some citrus, some pine tar, and some caramel malts. Medium body. Flavor of caramel malts, some nice hop depth, but a bit of a mineral aftertaste like they’ve added too much gypsum or something similar to treat the water. Not as big and full as a stone pale ale and that mineral aftertaste has got to go.

This pours an amber body with a creamy white head. The aroma has malt, hops and some citrus fruit notes. The flavor is crisp and clean with a good balance between the maltiness and hoppiness. Nice dry finish. Well done Pale Ale.

Bottle #2:
Bright clear orange/light amber colour with a dense off-white head. Strong citrus hops in the aroma. Medium to light-bodied; Strong hoppiness in the taste, but an excellent malt to back it up. Overall, a nice refreshing APA! I sampled this beer at Joey_Capps' on 13-September-2003 in Hamilton, Ontario. I brought this up for the guys from up North to try! Rating for this sample: 9,4,8,4,16.
Bottle #1:
Good colour, somewhat light golden, but for a APA, this is just fine. Good smell, pretty well dry hopped most likely. Good flavour with pleasant but not an overwhelming hop presence. A very light beer which isn't overwhelmed with tremendous amounts of malt and hop. This is one to drink time and time again. There is a reason the Old Dominion state (Virginia) is a great place to drink beer: The Old Dominion Brewing Company! Rating for this sample: 8,3,8,3,14.

The Three C's strike again! Just plain delicious - I would argue better than Tupper's Hop Pocket.
