Description
Our story began back in 2009, Old Dominion Brewing Company had been brewing and serving craft beers in Loudoun County Virginia since ‘89 and was a beloved fixture in the county. However, in 2009 the company had been bought by AB InBev and later relocated their operation to Delaware, which of course left a large void in the local craft beer community. During this transition, Matt Hagerman, Lost Rhino’s founder, had managed to purchase some of Old Dominion’s brewing equipment, including its 25 barrel brewhouse and started getting together a business plan. By starting his own adventure in brewing, he would also help bring the spirit of craft beer back into Loudoun County. Since Matt had been a brewer at Old Dominion, and knew exactly what he needed to make this goal a reality. So he found his own space, set up the brewhouse, fermentors, brite tanks and not too long after in 2011, began brewing some of our first and most beloved brands: New River Pale Ale, Rhino Chasers Pilsner, and Face Plant India Pale Ale right here in Loudoun.

Nowadays, Lost Rhino has grown quite a bit since it’s founding, but we have never lost sight of our love for the craft. In the brew house, we take pride in bringing classic styles and local flavor in all of our beers. Everything we craft is personal; we thrive on choosing the scenic route, the tough challenge, the road less traveled.

From tap at brewery and growler. Poured near-black, with a small off-white head. Aroma is mild vanilla, bourbon, oaked notes. Flavor is light roasted malts, vanilla, bourbon. Pretty enjoyable. Let this one warm up if it’s super cold - gets so much better as time passes.

On tap at the brewery. Poured a medium-dark hazy brown color with a medium sized light brown head. Most certainly carbonated. Aroma was malty, rich with mild notes of spice, dark fruits, touch of chocolate in there. Will re-rate the bottles if anything changes once I have one.

Tap and then growler from brewery. Poured cloudy yellow color, very very foamy. Aroma was grainy, with notes of light hops. Flavor was relatively solid, but perhaps a bit grain-forward. Decent enough, even with it a bit rough around the edges.

Draft. Clear golden color, massive tan ice cream cone head with amazing retention. Aroma of rising bread dough. Taste is malty straw and rye bread with white pepper and a bitter finish. Nice to see a well made lager for a change.

Draught at Birch & Barley, October 2011. Slightly hazy golden with a medium white head. Very refreshing with hops, fruit, bread and caramel. Medium body, not that bitter and with not much carbonation.
