Served on draft at Beer Run in Charlottesville, VA on 4/11/11. Pours a clear dark copper color with a thin frothy and creamy tan head. Decent head retention and lacing. Aroma of bitter herbal hops with some caramel malts. Big hoppy taste with peppery, herbal, fruity and metallic hop notes, which are strangely reminiscent of Mexican food, as well as faint caramel malts. Lingering bitterness. Medium bodied.

Port City Brewing Company, Va: Pours pretty much black with a brownish head. Aroma is of chocolate, with a few fruit notes, some mild coffee is in there as well. Body is nice and creamy; it isn’t heavy and it is plenty smooth even on a 90 degree day like today. Flavor is plentiful. Somewhat sweet. Not really going much in the bitter direction. A well-balanced brew and easily my favorite from these guys. I spent all my extra drink tickets on these jawns.

Port City Brewing Company: Pours a copper color with a white head. Aroma is of piny hops and the taste is pretty much along the same lines. The hops are not intense, nor are they mild. I think that this might be a little bit under-rated, but then again, it is not really an exceptional IPA. Nothing wrong with it though.

Port City Brewing Co.: Pours a golden color with a white head. Aroma is very fruity, displaying an array of fruity notes. There are also some hops in there. The taste is a little sweet (from all the fruity flavors) and has a good balance struck with the hop bitterness. Pretty good session beer and a little bit different from your run of the mill APA.

Faint tea and orange nose. Cloudy copper, full of fine floaties, thin head. Bread crust and marigold flavor, a robust sort of IPA. Slightly resinous, but perfectly acceptable. Decent, but ordinary.

The Big Hunt, DC pint ($6): Pours your standard wit color with a cloudy yellow and a white head. Aroma is to your utmost surprise cloves and banana. Taste is pretty much down that same road. This is a very drinkable beer, but does not really try that hard to make itself very different from other beer. In any case, it is well-balanced, but not highly nuanced.
