Description
McMullens was founded in 1827 by Peter McMullen and since then we have continued brewing in Hertford without a break. The heritage of AK, for example, can be traced back to 1833. We have protected the company’s brewing history throughout that time by acquiring and investing in the public houses. Our pubs are run by our managers or business partners and provide an exclusive market for our beers. To this day, the McMullen family remains firmly committed to our beers because they act as the ‘flag’ for our business.

Cask @ White Swan, Hebden Bridge. Clear copper and hoppy-sweet with a floral-maltiness. There's a hint of chocolate too - it's an all over the place mix!

Cask at the Nags Head, Covent Garden - as Nags Head,16/07/18. Clear golden copper with a decent off white head, good full glass lacing ensues. Nose is mellow fruit rinds, breads, straw, biscuit, light caramel. Taste comprises airy malts, toffee, toasted grains, light fruit cake, and little hedgerow. Medium bodied, soft carbonation, semi drying close. So so bitter ... a bit on the thin side.

Bottle at home. An old school English pale ale with lots of sweet malts and a resulting richness that as a package didn't do it for me at all. The sweetness was overpowering and quite caramally.

30/4/2018. Cask at Lady Grey's, Newcastle. Poured clear golden with an average sized creamy white head. Aroma of hop, citrus, light caramel, flowers and grass. Medium sweetness, light to moderate bitterness. Moderate body, creamy texture, very soft carbonation. NB - nothing to show McMullen on the pump clip but although listed separately on other sites, 'The Hertford Brewery' doesn't appear to warrant separate entry.
