Description
McMullens was founded in 1827 by Peter McMullen and since then we have continued brewing in Hertford without a break. The heritage of AK, for example, can be traced back to 1833. We have protected the company’s brewing history throughout that time by acquiring and investing in the public houses. Our pubs are run by our managers or business partners and provide an exclusive market for our beers. To this day, the McMullen family remains firmly committed to our beers because they act as the ‘flag’ for our business.

Two pints in the Woolpack in Hertford when I had to get out the house and took the family out to lunch. An excellent winter warmer with deep roasted malts and a smooth caramel flavour. The alcohol was evident, but it added to the flavour profile. This was in perfect condition and I am sure that this is helped by the pub being 200 meters from the brewery. Why can't other McMullen beers be as good as this?

Handpull cask at the George IV, Sawbridgeworth. Golden brown, clear with a foamy white head and lots of lacing. Nutty and slightly astringent nose. Toffee, caramel. Taste is bittersweet with a sweetness from the malt balanced by a bitter tang from the hop. Some sulphur in the aftertaste. Probably much better as a light mild. Hops seem out of place somehow.

Sampled after the McMullen Father’s Day Brewery tour. A very interesting tour followed by a sample of their special 190 anniversary beer. It was a bit cold, but the weather was so ridiculously hot I didn’t mind. This is a typical English bitter with plenty of malt, some bitter hops and a pleasant mouthfeel. A dark colour, some lacing and the malty mouthfeel that is typical of the brewer. It didn’t set my world on fire, but it was an ideal beer for the day and I could have enjoyed a few pints cowering in the shade.
