Description
McMullens was founded in 1827 by Peter McMullen and since then we have continued brewing in Hertford without a break. The heritage of AK, for example, can be traced back to 1833. We have protected the company’s brewing history throughout that time by acquiring and investing in the public houses. Our pubs are run by our managers or business partners and provide an exclusive market for our beers. To this day, the McMullen family remains firmly committed to our beers because they act as the ‘flag’ for our business.

Fra cask på The Spice of Life: klar kobbergylden med fint skum som varer lenge. En fruktig og lettdrikkelig bitter i klassisk engelsk stil. Fin bitterhet i den halvtørre avslutningen, som varer og varer.

NL/BEL excursion day minus 1: The King’s Arms, Fitzrovia, London: a small one, hand pulled. Aroma: vaguely vinous. Appearance: unusual: looks a bit like ruby port in the shade, add amber when held to the light, no head. Palate: light-bodied and slick, completely flat; finish is long with pronounced bitterness, no real astringency. Taste: medium-bitter, biscuit, oak, a hit of butter. A bit of carbonation would make this far more interesting.

NL/BEL excursion day minus 1: The King’s Arms, Fitzrovia, London: a small one, hand pulled. Aroma: practically odourless. Appearance: clear, very inviting light sherry, no head to speak of. Palate: light-bodied and slick, soft carbonation; nice lingering dry bite at the finish. Taste: lightly bitter with sweet notes, well-balanced. Biscuit, some astringency, easy drinking.

This is not even a classic English IPA. It actually reminds me of a Boddingtons, and I last had one of those over 30 years ago. Drinkable but totally non-descript.
