Description
McMullens was founded in 1827 by Peter McMullen and since then we have continued brewing in Hertford without a break. The heritage of AK, for example, can be traced back to 1833. We have protected the company’s brewing history throughout that time by acquiring and investing in the public houses. Our pubs are run by our managers or business partners and provide an exclusive market for our beers. To this day, the McMullen family remains firmly committed to our beers because they act as the ‘flag’ for our business.

It was Christmas pudding in a bottle! Lovely flavour of malt, stewed fruits and a bit of coffee with an underlying flavour of the alcohol.

Draft at the Nag’s Head - Covent Garden. Hazy amber body with small creamy head. Rather pedestrian bitter, gentle malts in aroma and taste. Nothing too remarkable here. Drinkable, but forgettable.

Bottle at home in London - sourced from Sainsburys way back when they did one of those beer promotions; this beer is BBE August 2013. So, pretty old. Pours a rather fetching amber-ruby with a creamy, khaki head. The aroma holds ripening berries, brown bread, fruit leather, plum. Medium sweet flavour with some hearty brown bread, more plums, dates, berries, faint earthy hops, strawberry. Medium to full bodied with fine carbonation. Lightly warming in the finish with a bit of sticky sugar, more ripe berries, some toffee, grapes, earth, leather, raisins. Overall, this is a pretty damn solid strong English ale. Nice work.

Cask at the Britannia, Marlow. Crystal-clear, glowing amber with a decent white head- an attractive brew. It’s a shame the taste isn’t up to the looks. A decent fruitiness up front is overwhelmed by slimy caramel. A touch of damp, dusty corners doesn’t really help. Does nothing to change my low opinion of this brewery.

Bottle from Morrisons, Harwich. Poured a hazy medium amber with a thin broken white head. The aroma is sweet malt, citrus, light grassy hop. The flavour is moderate bitter with a light watery, mineral, light hop bitter palate. Light to medium bodied with average carbonation. Nice label :-)
