draft - Pours clear deep gold with a small white head. It smells of bready, grainy malt. The flavor is of sweet, grainy malt and some very mild hops. This brew is basically fizzy yellow beer. It’s better than most pale lagers, I’ll give it that, but it’s still unimpressive.

Thick black pour with a dark, quarter-inch head. Roasted, burnt malts. Dark fruits, molasses, raisin, and light booze. Chewy, thick, syrupy, oily body. The flavor has a smooth roasted feel to the whole thing. As it warms up a bit the booze really shines through and makes it a bit messy. This one start out super impressive but falls off the back side as you go. Still, not too shabby from Leiny.

Bottle. Eh, not a fan at all. Poured a cloudy ruby color with moderate off-white almost light red head. Aroma is grains, artificial berry, touch of honey. Flavor was roughly the same. Relatively refreshing, though nothing spectacular about it at all.

Bottled, thanks Bierkrug! Clear pale amber, creamy head. Fruity nose with canned pineaaple, ripe mango and tin. Sweet and fruity, fairly light bodied with rounded mouthfeel. Slick, grainy mait, some tropical fruit hoppiness and a mid bitter finish. Well drinkable.

12 oz. bottle, pours black with a tan head. Aroma of coconut, licorice, bourbon and molasses. Flavour of coconut, light roastiness, a little iodine and molasses. Sort of a mess, but it somehow works decently well.

Bottle. Black body, almost opaque. Big frothy tan head, rapidly diminishing. Sweet and odd mixture of aromas: molasses, prune juice, dark chocolate. Hint of figs, soy sauce and roasted malt, but barely detectable. The flavor is moderately to heavily sweet and lightly bitter. It finishes moderately sweet and moderately bitter. Full body, creamy texture and moderate carbonation. Roasted malts come through much more in the flavor than in the aroma, leaving a coffee-like bitterness on the tongue in the finish. Complex tastes of bitter chocolate, licorice, and caramels. Still, there is a flavor of salty soy sauce that is hard to get around. That, combined with the close-to-cloying sweetness, left me disappointed.

Aroma: The nose has lots of burnt malts, roast, caramel, and chocolate
Appearance: Pours a clearish dark brown-black color with a light brown head, fairly heavy lace
Flavor: The flavor is also rather malt heavy, lots of roast, light sweetness, light smoke
Palate: The body is light-medium, fairly thin, not particularly creamy considering the name
Overall Impression: My 10th rating of a Leiny beer, I wouldn't have guessed I'd tried that many, I guess quite a few of them have been forgetable. This one is better then many of the others but still nothing remarkable. If you are a fan of really roasted (burnt) malts, this one is probably for you. Not bad, but not really a stand-out either.

A dark copper amber ale with a thin moka head. In aroma, nutty grassy malt with boiled beans. In mouth, a sweet caramel malt with faint hops, oily mouthfeel, cloying. On tap at Maggies on the River, Feb. 20 2011.
