Bottle from Bier Koning. Solo hungover tasting in my hotel room! Opaque black beer. Little tan head. Licorice dark malt, smooth but a little bitter. Not roasty though! Turns a little creamier before the minerally semi dry finish. Not bad!

Bottle from Bier Koning. Solo hungover tasting in my hotel room! Hazy gold beer. Little white head. Light palate, semi dry. Mild citrus in a slightly herby malt backdrop. Fresh tasting. Semi dry finish. Mild bitterness. Easy drinking pleasant beer.

Bottle at Fin & Loz’s tasting with Jan, Charlotte, Craig, Stella & kids consumed 21.10.11 I purchased this beer at Bierkoning, Amsterdam, Netherlands, September 2011 Pours black really smooth. This is roasty but not too hard on the bitterness and roasty front. Some vanilla and a nice warmth shines through. Not too pushy and all things considered a damn nice imperial stout. Craig suggests that the Belgians and Dutch (with a couple of notable exceptions) cannot really make these big stouts, I disagree I think that they can and do and often with a lot more subtlety. Bottled from de Schans. Slight hazy copper color, beautiful big head. Soft fruity aroma, slight citrus, bit toffee, caramel. Slight nutty, biscuit. Bit sweetish taste of toffee and biscuit, together with soft fruity bitterness. Creamy mouthfeel. Only slight alcohol burn. I dont know if it fits the classic doppelbock style perfectly, but it is a wonderful beer.

Bottle from De Bierkonning, Amsterdam, Netherlands, 01.10.11 consumed at home w/c 10.10.11 Orangey/gold in appearance with a white rim of bubbles and white filminess across the top. Nice saison. buzzy in the mouth with a light citrus sting, in fact this really is quite citrussy. Loz gets soft overipe banana as well, possibly a touch sweet otherwise very good. A7 A4 T8 P4 Ov15 3.8

33cl Bottle from De Bierkoning. Clear amber colour, big white head. Aroma is sweet, malty, toffee, light fruity, alcohol. Flavour is a lot less sweet than expected, malty, toast, floral, light fruity, toffee, sharp phenolic and alcoholic, bitter finish. Medium bodied, slick mouthfeel. A bit rough in flavour, but nice.

Bottled @ home. Clear orange amber color, medium off-white head. Aroma is spicy and peppery with some caramel and toasted malts. Taste is quite dry, again peppery with some caramel. Slight metallic hint, little sourish. Reasonable bitterness, stands out a bit more because of the dryness. It’s like being a mix of a Dupont-like peppery saison (could it be wyeast belgian saison yeast?) with a touch of caramelly sweetness. Interesting.

33cl Bottle from De Bierkoning. Slightly hazy copper amber colour, lasting creamy white head. Aroma is very fruity upfront, ripe and unripe fruits, sweet, yeast, light spicy. Flavour is light sweet, floral, fruity, light fruity sourness, yeast, light spicy, dry, hint of smoke, nice dry bitter finish. Medium bodied, soft carbonation.

33cl Bottle at ’t Arendsnest. Clear reddish amber colour, creamy off white head. Aroma of pale malts, hint of bread, nice floral yeast notes, subtle sweet caramel, grassy hops. Flavour is light sweet, dry, malty, light caramel, nice floral notes again, hint of lavender, good grassy bitter finish. Medium bodied, slick. All very subtle, typical Schans brew, which means not very outspoken, but well crafted.
