This has a big burst of mango aroma, followed by pine and some dry biscuit. Smooth mouthfeel and a nice balance between the citrus and tropical.

While trying to do something different they've robbed us of the best bit of a chocolate stout. The bitter chocolate means you don't get the velvety mouthfeel and taste that you're looking for. Aromas of chocolate and toast. Some light Belgian choc in the mouth is overwhelmed by the bitter notes.

Very nice, full-bodied pale ale with plenty of hops thrown in too. Heaps of pine and grapefruit with a little stone fruit and honey too.

This one is listed as being retired, but it's obviously back out roaming the shelves. There's a big pine aroma, plus some caramel and melon. The hops are a little too overpowering in the mouth, kind of obliterating everything else. Just a little too much of a good thing for me. Can from Sense of Taste, Hamilton.

A quality black IPA. Aromas of coffee, chicory, orange and grapefruit. Add loads of chocolate to the taste and you've got a very tasty beer. Can from Sense of Taste, Hamilton.

Can. Dark brown with a beige head of about a cm. 3+ Aroma is quite roasty with some coffee too. Underneath is nectarine, orange and pine. Nice but not compelling. But a taste is more impressive - it's quite light bodied and the roasted and coffee flavours become an accent to the fruit and pine. A bitter finish but nothing really dominates and everything has its own space. Lovely balance.

Can, 9%. Clear deep amber with a good cm of off white head. Oozes pine, cooked kumquats, breadcrust. Full bodied, sweet. Only hints of stewed fruit. Brooding citrus and resin. Bitterness takes a while to struggle though but certainly does. There is a view that IIPAs have to lighten the load with sugar or dextrose lest they be too heavy to let the hops shine (and if you don't what's the point?). This is good but reminds me of that view.
