Description
Way back in 1986, before craft brewing was even cool, Summit Brewing Company Founder and President Mark Stutrud set out in St. Paul, Minnesota, to make craft beers inspired by old-world brewing traditions and ingredients. More than 30 years have passed since he first brewed our flagship Summit Extra Pale Ale, and it’s safe to say he freaking nailed it.

Today, Summit Brewing continues to infuse traditional recipes with modern ingredients from around the world, crafting high-quality and consistent craft beer out of respect for the hardworking folks who enjoy our beer.

And because we’re independently owned and operated, we get to make craft beer our way. That means relying on natural carbonation, protecting the foam, and celebrating the true dance between malts, hops, water, and yeast. It means protecting the environment, supporting the community and the arts, being kind to animals, and always having one more beer with our friends and family even if we’re already late for rotary club. It means drinking our beer fresh and cold, because warm storage turns good beer to shit. And it means never settling for “good enough,” always pulling the goalie when we’ve got a chance to win, swinging for the fences, and never, ever forgetting where we come from. Grain country represent.

On tap at Summit. Amber color and the foam takes a long time to settle. Simple flavor, dry malt and bread, and not much more than that. Drinkable and sessionable, but no complexity.

On draught at the brewery. Strong aroma of roasted even burned grain. This gives flavors and aromas of bitter chocolate and coffee and burned toast. Alcohol is noticeable in the aroma and on the plate. Well carbonated. Sadly I think they went to far with intensity of the over toasted malt and that is the dominant characteristic. A little sugar with theroast but a lack of other flavors or aromas to make it more interesting.

I was really expecting something more here, kind of a let down. Aroma is nice with some caramel toffee yeast and Spice. Average appearance. What flavor is on the Bland side slightly sweet little malt little Carbonic Tang. Body is a tad thin. Overall it's forgettable.

Not bad for an almost traditional Alt. Like the previous reviewer, I picked up some hop in the flavor where it does not belong. But otherwise it follows true to tradition. Aroma has malt toffee and a bit of roast. Maybe the flavor would have been like that but the Hop masks it all.

Great Taste 2017. Copper color and it appears thin. Light hops and some dry malt flavor. Light beer overall. This is not as good as the regular EPA. hops are minimal, I did not perceive any of the strong fruit flavors. Disappointing from these guys.

Slight hint of hop aroma but it's mostly caramel malt and a little Belgian yeast and some spice. Appearance is decent with some sudsy fairly long-lasting head and a nice medium amber color. Flavor is more bitter than sweet and has plenty Carbonic Tang. But has very little hop flavor. Decent body boring finish.

Tap at the brewery. This does not fit perfectly into the Belgian Strong category, the alcohol is low. The carbonation is also low compared to some of the better Belgian examples. Dark color; some head. Aroma has sweet malt. Thick, syrup like palate. Dried fruit. Sweet overall.

On tap at the brewery but also available in bottles. Brown color, thin lacing head. Grain and malt aroma, flavor has a lot of hops, especially for the style. Some sugar, a very mild toasted grain flavor, and a cereal grain finish. Solid beer, but maybe too much hop character for an alt.

Ordinary copper color. Dry biscuit aroma with yeast, similar to a Chouffe but not as bright with the hops. Flavor has medium sweet malt and biscuit. Moderately well hopped, some orange peel, a little floral and a dry finish. Rather expensive for the low abv.
