Description
Way back in 1986, before craft brewing was even cool, Summit Brewing Company Founder and President Mark Stutrud set out in St. Paul, Minnesota, to make craft beers inspired by old-world brewing traditions and ingredients. More than 30 years have passed since he first brewed our flagship Summit Extra Pale Ale, and it’s safe to say he freaking nailed it.

Today, Summit Brewing continues to infuse traditional recipes with modern ingredients from around the world, crafting high-quality and consistent craft beer out of respect for the hardworking folks who enjoy our beer.

And because we’re independently owned and operated, we get to make craft beer our way. That means relying on natural carbonation, protecting the foam, and celebrating the true dance between malts, hops, water, and yeast. It means protecting the environment, supporting the community and the arts, being kind to animals, and always having one more beer with our friends and family even if we’re already late for rotary club. It means drinking our beer fresh and cold, because warm storage turns good beer to shit. And it means never settling for “good enough,” always pulling the goalie when we’ve got a chance to win, swinging for the fences, and never, ever forgetting where we come from. Grain country represent.

Sample at Bob's Bar. The beer is a clear orange-gold color with a medium thin off-white head that recedes steadily to an outer ring. Short strings of lace. Aroma of roast malt, mild hops and fruit. Light-bodied with flavors of earthy hops, caramel malt and a bit of citrus. The finish is sweet with a malty aftertaste. Decent overall.

Can, thanks to Steasy66. Hazy pale yellow with large foamy off-white head, mild bread like aroma, high carbonation, lightly bitter malty taste with honey undertones, thin body, dry finish. Very nice Pilsner.

12oz can. Hmm. Another lackluster offering from Summit. I feel like they would have nailed this style had the made it when series first started. Now they go soft, cheap, streamlined...which begs...what is the point of the unchained series? The chains show, in that the malt complexity is less than Modelo. Pretty uninspired stuff. Drinkable enough, not off , just bland for the style.

On tap at Red Cow North Loop. Pours a clear straw yellow with a white head that dissipates slowly to the edges. Aroma has strong hay and grains with a bit of strawberry underlying. Flavor is full of straw with some hay and a decent amount of sweet strawberry.

4 oz. sample at El Bait Shop, De Monies, Iowa. Black appearance. Aroma of toasted malt, coffee, & weak chocolate. Flavor of roasted malt, oats, coffee, and chocolate. Lighter side of medium body, mild creamy texture. Nicely balanced, a tad light but about what it should be overall.

At the fair. Pale color. Moderate hops in the aroma, and just a little strawberry, because I am looking for it. Drier and more hop flavor than I expected. Mildly bitter hops, some malt. Rather plain and uninspired.

Cask at The Great British Beer Festival 2017, Olympia, London. A black coloured pour with a thin beige head on top. Roasty, malty, chocolate aroma. Tastes roasty, malty, chocolate, quite thin and slightly sweet. Not a great deal going on here but it is fine.

12 oz can from a six pack bought in ND or MN, I can’t remember which. Aroma is grainy, wet hayfields, Fun Dip stix, a little lemon, dough. Pours hazy golden with a big fluffy head with great retention. Taste is lightly bitter, a tad spicy. Good.
