Description
Craft beer in its purest form is what Sebastian Sauer, the head behind Freigeist beer culture, produces. Sebastian is known among experts as one of the first craft beer brewers in Germany. True or not, he's a veteran in the craft beer scene and an expert who is second to none. It's not for nothing that his beers are more popular than any other German beer in the USA, the home of craft beer.
Free spirit beer culture is conquering the craft beer world with the salvation of old, long-forgotten beer styles. Sebastian reads himself into the matter until he has found out all the ingredients of the original recipe and the subtleties and secrets of the old brewing style. With this knowledge, he then ponders how the beer would be brewed these days and what ingredients would be used. He doesn't want to bring old camels out of grandma's handbag to the light of day, but rather to transport the beers of the past with skill and expertise into the present. His beers are therefore not just reproductions of old recipes, but rather modern new editions. With this concept, the brewery has made a good name for itself in the craft beer scene and attracted international attention.

On tap at Holy Craft Beer Bar, pours a dark chestnut brown with a large beige head. Aroma is bready and dry, with toasted chestnuts and dry bready malt. Flavour is dry and timid, with gentle toasted chestnuts, some earthiness, and a slightly aggressive carb. It's alright — rather timid.

On tap at Holy Craft Beer Bar, pours a deep dark brown with a small beige head. Aroma is complex, with plenty of toasted caramel, smokiness, and bready notes. Flavour is rich, with plenty of smoked malt, toasted caramel, bready malt, and a litre iodine. Quite intense, though not brutal at all. Balanced and complex. Very nice.

Tap at Protokoll, huge thanks Timo! Clear golden body, white head. Malty aroma, saliva, bit herbal, doughy. Soft malty taste, lightly herbal, pleasant balance. Bit dry in the finish. Fine. --- Beer aliased from original tick of Dortmund Style Export on 27 Feb 2024 at 18:33 - Score: Appearance - 8 | Aroma - 6 | Flavor - 7 | Texture - 6 | Overall - 6.5. Pretty good! I haven't had a chestnut beer since Japan, five years ago. Bitter, roasty, distinct nutty taste.

I like this brewery because they do interesting things, but they don't usually seem to spend much time perfecting their beers or making sure they're balanced. This really seems like they took a random porter and threw a bunch of supermarket Port wine in

0.33 l bottle from 'Vormann Brauerei', best before December 2024. Hazy, dark reddish brown with a thin, frothy, quickly diminishing, off-white head. Sweetish-malty, slightly roasty aroma of cocoa, coffee, toasted nuts and caramel. Quite sweet, malty, moderately bitter, gently roasty taste of caramel, cocoa, coffee, toasted nuts and some raisins, followed by a short, moderately roasty-bitter finish. Medium body, gently effervescent mouthfeel, soft carbonation. Solid ale, some sort of brown ale maybe, don't really get the chestnuts to be honest.
