Description
Note to Brewver members:-

The majority of beers have historically been released as 'Canterbury - XYZ' so should appear in the beer listings without the brewery name.

There is also a range of beers, usually only available at the brewpub itself and smaller batch, released as 'Foundry - XYZ'. These beers therefore appear with the Foundry name first in the beer listings.

Canterbury Brewers is a traditional microbrewery and the only one based within the city walls of Canterbury. We produce a range of modern and fresh cask-conditioned ales using only the finest quality floor-malted barley, hops and yeast available. With our distinctive recipes and our beautiful new brewery situated on Whitehorse Lane, we aim to add something different to the ever-growing and vibrant micro-brew scene in Kent. The Foundry Brewery, which opened in June 2011, is in sight of Canterbury Cathedral and just off the high street, and includes a restaurant, bar and an eight-barrel brewery. Brewery tours and tastings run regularly, and our restaurant can be booked for special events and functions - just get in touch!

500ml bottle, 5.8 % abv, received from the great man known as Harrisoni during a meet-up in London last November. Many thanks! Rocky, fawn-coloured head leaving lacework to the glassware. Nice rustic coloured body. Slightly roasted smell of dark, mid-sweet malts, notes of earth and bread. Bittersweet grainy taste with hints of caramel malts. Finish off with bitter roastiness and a touch of dark fruits. Medium bodied. Not a typical porter in my book, but quite nice anyway (shared with Finn, Tromsø 07.01.2013).

500ml bottle passed on by Harrisoni during a trip to London last November. Many thanks to Harrisoni for this beer gift that Finn and I enjoyed back home during a rating session. Pours a beige, bubbly head with good duration. Spotty lacing to the glass. Near-clear, golden body. Dry hoppy fruits and grainy malts to the nose. Mild malt-fruity taste with leafy hops creating a fine, dry bitter ending. Smooth on the swallow. Nice bitter (Tromsø, 07.01.2013).

Bottle at ChrisO tasting, thanks to Ian, 30/12/12. Light black with a very thin tan head that clears immediately. Nose is soy sauce, dark malt, burnt toffee, wood. Taste is dark malt, harsh booze, sweet sugars, whisky tones, wood, more booze. Full bodied, flat as in terms of carbonation, harsh boozey finish. Ok - drinkable, lacking balance, rough around the edges.

Bottle at ChrisO tasting, thanks to Ian, 30/12/12. Hazed light golden with a thin white film and frothy white bubbles at the extremeties. Nose is farmy, soured fruits, grass, spice, touch of apricot and orange, quite acrid - great ! Taste follows, bitter and soured fruits, apple, apricots, orange, grassy, farmy, funky. Medium in body with soft carbonation lending towards a bitter dry finish. A most decent saison, probably the best I recall drinking from a UK brewer !
