Cask at the Hope Tap (JDW), Reading. Golden amber with a flat, tight, cream head; earthy malt aroma with some light hops; medium bodied, with some sweet caramel malts to start, soon outshadowed by some assertive hops, not exactly in your face but making their presence felt. Unfortunately the finish is rather short, leaving some light hops and caramel malts to linger. Talk to the hand, cos’ the face ain’t listening.

Cask at The Market Porter, London. Mostly malts. Very sweet, notes of cake and bread. Very little hop presence. Easy to drink with a subtle kick, though not a hop kick, and certainly not in my face.

[Cask at the Three Crowns, Chippenham] Deep amber with a thin off-white head and a light fizz. Very sweet and sticky, malt dominates with some straw and earth. There are some flowers and grapefruit in the background, but really the toffee sweetness dominates. OK beer, but not what I was expecting at all.
