Half pint handpulled from cask at the great Turf Tavern in Oxford. Mahogany body colour with almost lack of head. Moderate hoppy smell followed by a taste that brings caramel malts and hop bitterness towards the finish. Dry ending (celebrating the first day of our conference on early modern witchcraft 14.03.2008).

500ml bottle from Morrisons. On cask, a real best bitter favourite. this has the yeast and fruit aroma. Not as bad as some pasteurised beers. One of the more characterful beers. Good yeast, fruity malt balance. Hop is a bit understated. As a pasteurised beer, not bad, but not as good as on cask.

[i] Bottle from Morrisonโs, Banbury, Oxon 31-12-07 had this today 01-01-08 [/i] Poured Reddy amber, had a malty nose. Very caramelly in taste and with the Greene King by numbers taste, safe uniteresting and frankly rather boring, but for all its ordinariness it was ok.

Cask at Wetherspoons near Trafalgar Square, London.
Pours a ruby red colour with small white head. There was too much smoke to feel the nose. Fruity and hoppy taste with notes of spices. Watery bitterish finish. 4.5%ABV.

[i] Cask at the Red Lion, Northmoor, Oxon, leg three of the Thames Tipple [/i]Poured mid amber, some sweetness on the nose but little else. The taste was quite plain, reasonable bitterness underpinned with some sweet malts [/i]

500ml bottle from Morrisons. Chestnut brown with a loose white head; leafy hop aroma; thin and zingy in the mouth, strongly bitter with a citrus edge and a dry biscuit finish. A reasonable pasteurised bitter.

Cask conditioned at The Barony Bar, Edinburgh. Amber to copper coloured beer, creamy head. Oaky / woody aroma, notes of farmhouse and cellar. The flavour is also woody and moderately malty, fairly dry. Dusty hops in the finish.

Cask handpull at Drum Inn, Stanford North. This was a really great session bitter. I could easily have necked it all night. It had the right balance and blend of yeast, malt and hops. Some character from the yeast showed through too. And it was in great, great condition. The landlord said it had only just come on.

Cask at the Old Red Lion (Holborn). Slightly woody malt aroma. Deep amber color with an off-white head that laces. Starts a bit woody, astringent, decently bitter. The flavor expands with time, not changing, just more.
