Description
Pucker Up & Join the Sour Revolution

Cascade Brewing has been a pioneer in the sour beer renaissance since 2006 and is the proud innovator of the Northwest Sour Ale. We are, by nature, the definition of artisanal brewing: we’re not bound by stylistic guidelines, just our own imagination and the ingredients we can access. Our distinctive sour beer blends feature fruit forward, barrel-aged ales that offer a complex array of flavors derived from Northwest grown ingredients, with each release capturing the unique subtleties of that year’s growing season. Our beers are brewed at our original brewery in Southwest Portland, then blended and aged at our nearby Blending House, which holds more than 1,300 oaks barrels and nine foudre tanks.

500ml bottle, 2017 vintage. White grape aroma with notes of wheat malt, orange, barnyard, funk, vanilla, white wine and oak. Pours brilliantly clear golden colored with a thin white head that has some retention and good lacing. Starts with white grape, barnyard, wheat malt and vanilla flavors as well as having a lively mouthfeel. Finishes bone dry and zippy with orange citrus, funk, vinous white wine and oak flavors. Very nice sour even going on 8 years old.

Tap at KEG. Ruby colour, no head. Nose is super intense fruity, mainly raspberries, with a funky tart touch. In taste it’s less fruity and much more sour, perhaps a bit over the top to my liking. Long sour finish, light body, average carbo. Tasty, if a bit too sour.

Tap at KEG. Deeper golden pour with a lacing white head. Nose is intense pear and rosemary, with additional hints of funk, acetic acid, wood, leather and earthy touches. Lovely. Taste is less intense and complex, showing pear, rosemary and wood with some funk. Moderately tart. Closes with a tart, fruity and dry finish, has a medium body and average carbonation.

Tap at KEG. Pours copper with thin head. Nose is big funk, lotta grapes, slightly sweet and pretty tart. Taste is grapes upfront, moderately sweet and rather tart. Then some pretty solid funky notes appear, rounding the taste nicely. Long lasting sweet and tart, funky finish, medium body, soft to average carbo. Tasty.

Bottle (2013 vintage) shared at Vál at the annual hop harvest. Pours copper with off-white head. Nose is sour and is packed with funky brett, some acetic acid too, a hint of wood nd some stonefruits. Taste is so, soo sour, kinda over the zop for me. There are hints of funk here as well, even some woody notes, but the acetic acid just overwhelming really. Closes with long sour finish, has light to medium body and average to high carbonation. Expected more dimensions really.
