Cascade Brewing has been a pioneer in the sour beer renaissance since 2006 and is the proud innovator of the Northwest Sour Ale. We are, by nature, the definition of artisanal brewing: we’re not bound by stylistic guidelines, just our own imagination and the ingredients we can access. Our distinctive sour beer blends feature fruit forward, barrel-aged ales that offer a complex array of flavors derived from Northwest grown ingredients, with each release capturing the unique subtleties of that year’s growing season. Our beers are brewed at our original brewery in Southwest Portland, then blended and aged at our nearby Blending House, which holds more than 1,300 oaks barrels and nine foudre tanks.

Tap at Hopa. Copper pour, lacing off-white head. Nose is intense lactic and acetic acid, grapes and berries, some spicy woody touch. Taste is also rather heavily sour, but after a few sips it seems to mellow. There's also fruity hints, brett, woody very well mixed. Closes with long lasting sour finish, has medium to full body and has soft to average carbo. After the initial shock it becomes rather pleasant.

2016 vintage bottle shared at work. Opaque, orangeish golden pour with quickly disappearing head. Nose is sour berries, with a mellow yet definite spicy touch to it. I mainly pick up cinnamon, but there sure is more going on. Taste is rather sour, but not as much as other Cascade releases. There's some lactic acid and acetic acid too, but they leave space for the fruit and spices, and I'm glad they do. The sip is perfectly rounded and shows its many layers: fruits, spices, acidic touches and funk all come through. Lovely.

Sample at Haandfest 2019. Dark amber body with a nice beige head. Aroma of malt, acidic fruit, some wood and mild vinegar. Flavor is malt, toffee, red fruit, acid, red wine, wood, tannin and red berries. Fine body and long lasting rather sour and complex aftertaste. A fine balance of slightly sweet malt, sour fruit and barrel aged red wine.

Shared bottle @ Patricks. Quite clear pale golden body with a small, fast disappearing, lacing white head. Aroma is nice, quite acidic fruity or maybe more in the direction of berries and grapes, hint of wood. Flavor is clean, crisp, acidic berries/grapes with wood and mild funk. Fine balanced body and rather tart in aftertaste. Very nice, feels quite acidic after the first sips, but seems to get in balance after a few more sips.

Bottle @ Drugie DNO, Warsaw May 2018. Unclear golden orange body with a small. Lacing white head. Delicate aroma of fruit and sour berries, grapes, mild wood and light funky. Flavor has a high complexity of fruit, berries, grapes, wood and mild funk/Brett. It’s kind of sweet and sour with not to much in any direction. Quite gentle actually, but very balanced and tasty. Just love it.

Bottle from the lcbo. Murky yellowish orange pour, with a medium white head. Aroma is wet hay, loads of citrus zest, earthy wood, barrel, and loads of funk, great example of the "barnyard aroma". Lovely mouth feel, lively carb. Very sour finish, dry, and crisp. Loads more funk and barnyard flavours, wet hay, hints of stone fruit, apricot, and orange marmalade.

Bottle from the lcbo. Opaque brown pour, with a medium beige head. Aroma is dark sour plums, malt vinegar and lactic dark fruit. Vinous, red whine notes mingle with barrel notes. Hints of baking spices, funk and cereals. Medium tart finish, fruity, sour, complex, alcohol well hidden.
