Description
Pucker Up & Join the Sour Revolution

Cascade Brewing has been a pioneer in the sour beer renaissance since 2006 and is the proud innovator of the Northwest Sour Ale. We are, by nature, the definition of artisanal brewing: we’re not bound by stylistic guidelines, just our own imagination and the ingredients we can access. Our distinctive sour beer blends feature fruit forward, barrel-aged ales that offer a complex array of flavors derived from Northwest grown ingredients, with each release capturing the unique subtleties of that year’s growing season. Our beers are brewed at our original brewery in Southwest Portland, then blended and aged at our nearby Blending House, which holds more than 1,300 oaks barrels and nine foudre tanks.

750 ml waxed and capped bottle purchased mail order directly from the brewery. Pour is a murky mahogany with a 2 inch off brownish-red head. Falls with decent lacing. Aroma of sweet floral perfume and cherries. Musty vanilla. Mild sourness. Wonderful, balanced and engaging nose. Taste is vanilla, oak wood, tart cherries and more of the soft floral sweetness. Everything is exceptionally integrated and balanced. The cherry is really fresh and brightly tart, not in your face sour, just beautifully melded with the rest of the flavors. Wow, this is really good. Palate is medium, clean and nicely carbonated. Aftertaste coats the mouth and lingers perfectly. This beer does not hit you over the head on any element, just beautifully crafted. Thanks for starting mail order, Cascade!

22 oz bottle mail ordered directly from the brewery. Pour is black, with ruby highlights and a smallish tan head. Aroma of pine hops and roasty sweet caramel maltiness. There is also a cocoa / milky element to the nose. The oak barrel mixes in as well. Interesting. Taste is the roasty, toasty slightly sweet caramel maltiness and a big shot of the pine hoppiness. Taste actually mirrors the nose quite well, also showing the oak barrel and cocoa. The residual hop aftertaste gets into hay and grassy areas as well. The oak barrel has some vanilla notes too. Palate is nicely mouth coating, and medium. Overall, I really liked this.

Big hops aroma. Cloudy gold color, and a large, rocky white head. It is a fine looking beer. Unfortunately the flavor is not as good as the aroma or the appearance. Very light citrus hops. It might be old. Medium palate. I think it would be really good and flavorful fresh. Thanks to Skyview for sharing.

Bottle thanks to Bu11zeye. Pours with a nice off-white head that leaves good lacing. Hazy reddish brown body. Aroma of caramel, sourness, cherries, more sour and oak. Taste is sour upfront and gets a bit more fruity as it warms (but not as much as the aroma suggests). Lightly fizzy. More recent bottle...extremely vinous with cherries and brown sugar.

Feb 2009
hazy dull amber. Funky, footy pedio nose with light caramel and dates. Tart, sweet & sour taste. Nuanced juicy fruits (peach, plum, apricot) yet there’s a light brown sugar note too. Sweetness remains underneath, but this has definitely improved.

Initial rating, March 2008

Blend of five different beers. About 2 months old when sampled in March. Fiery amber colour. Slight haze. Has a big malt nose with light dark fruit accent, as in a quadrupel. Some vinous qualities that make me want to have a porterhouse. Tartness encloses the palate, duelling with an intensely sweet peachiness. This has a lot of potential - there’s quite a lot going on here. Once this dries out people will be looking for it. 7-3-7-3-14 = 3.4

12 oz draft at Brouwers Cafe Sour Fest in Seattle, Washington. Pour is clear mahogany with only a thin off white head. Aroma is faint, I pick up on some caramel sweetness and lemon sourness. Taste is really full, a bit unexpected after the muted nose; cherry sour sweetness, tart yeastiness in the finish. Acidic throughout. This is a really nice Flanders Red. I have really enjoyed all of the Cascade beers I have tried. I guess you were right Rick.

6 oz draft at Brouwers Cafe Sour Fest in Seattle, Washington. Pour is ruby and brown, mostly clear with a one inch white head - very pretty in the glass. Aroma of soft floral tartness and mango fruit. Very delicate nose. Taste is full, apricot and mango fruit, tart yeastiness, and a slightly honey sweet sticky finish. Tart lemony, really superb. I really enjoyed the interplay between the delicate nose and the full flavor.

Thanks to beastiefan2k - medium purple beer, with a tan lace - aroma of chocolate, raspberry, earthy character (but not in a good way) - medium tart up front, with sour, spoiled fruit flavors - some chocolate underneath, but more like dry cocoa (no real sweetness) - root plant character throughout - bizarre.

Thanks to beastiefan2k for sharing - fizzy dark red beer, with zero head - smells of christmas spices, tarts cherries, skins and pits - it’s got this kind of scented candle and cherry-flavored candy character to it - light acidity - some chocolate way in the back - mild sweetness makes me wish for more acidity - kind of one-dimensional.

From hannont. It pours nice enough when it comes to colorful fruits, a dark purple color with a dark pink hued small head. Aroma is a leafy berry, more like the green leaves at the base of the berry than actual berry. Some sweet-less jam in there as well. Taste loses the vegetal (good), and there is a hint of tartness present and there is just a little bit of tickling acidity. Its rather nice, full mouthfeel ands to the heft of the beer. Get rid of the "green" from the nose and sour it up a bit more and you got a real winner here.
750mL dark green capped and waxed bottle, Rodenbach GC smaller tulip.
