Clear pale blond beer, small creamy head, little stable, non adhesive. Aroma: lots of marijuana, dank hops, fruity, tropical fruits, bit cheesy, onions, sweaty feet, more heavy dank hops, lovely! MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: fruity, mango, soft bitterness. Aftertaste: soft bitterness, fruity, very dank, lovely, very nice beer!

I Draught /I Small white head over hazy orange-ochre beer. Oranges, wild yeasts, perfumey to soapy. Mild sour, oranges, preserved oranges; Mandarine Napoléon without the sugar and the alcohol. Quite slick, yet giving a light body impression. Name is more interesting than the beer.

Golden colour with thin head. Aroma and flavour have zesty, citrusy hop notes. Pleasantly clean. Not bogged down by heavy caramelisation or alcohol.

Humboldt & Gauss, a young micro brewing project in Mariakerke near Ghent I almost instantly fell in love with, needed a bigger beer it seems, and thus presents us with this double IPA, hopped with no less than seven different varieties (see above). Provisional rating again as I had this from a plastic cup at the Copacobana Festival in Ghent - will rerate this from a bottle as soon as I see it appear in e.g. De Hopduvel. Thick and dense, mousy, eggshell-white, stable head, hazy warm orangey-tinged apricot blonde robe. Citric nose, orange peel, yellow grapefruit, kumquat, notes of dried mango, white bread dough, lychee, white pepper. Fruity onset, green banana, lychee and kiwi aspects, lively fizz but not too numbing and fit for the intended style, soft bready middle, smooth-edged but full pale malt sweetishness with a doughy quality to it, soaked in citric, zesty hoppiness, dominated by orange peel and pink grapefruit effects with a dash of mango again, but subtly so; peppery bitter hint at the end, accentuated by warming, gin-like alcohol. Very modern DIPA, in being relatively gentle in hop bitterness, with more emphasis on juiciness and aromatics without actually descending into New England territory. This type of 'Americanized' beers is really these guys' forte, and for that reason alone, I think they are a very welcome addition to the Ghent brewing scene, clearly distinct with their own house style. Cheers Thomas!
