Bottle 33 cl. Pours a cloudy, opaque deep, dark red with a rich, lacing pinkisk head. Very intense cherry aroma - almost marzipan. Rich, sweet body dominated by sweet cherry accents, the cherry notes really stay in your mouth, but according to the label it's 'natural cherry aroma'. Delicious at first, but the sweetness gets somewhat cloying after a while. The 8% alcohol is pretty well hidden. 191121

A new to me retailer, Finest Belgian Beers, provided this 33 cl beer. One of a number of quadrupels acquired over the summer, now is the right time of year to have a taste. I lift the cap and tilt into my GH tulip glass to determine a darker than usual brown body for a quad followed by a slender top of light tan foam. The initial response to the smell, I like it significantly. Rich stewed dark fruits, dark grain bread and a certain maltiness working its way up. I take a drink, wow, am I surprised. Dark cherries, figs, fruit cake, a toffee sweetness, syrup, chocolate, thick wheat bread, an indication of the alcohol underlying along with a pronounced, for a quadrupel, bitterness. Better than I expected for a style I like considerably.

330ml bottle. Clear, yellow-ish, golden colour with average to huge, firm, frothy, moderately lasting, minimally lacing, white head. Floral, grassy hoppy and floral, yeasty spicy aroma, minimally grainy, wheaty malty background, notes of chamomile, orange blossom, a touch of fresh hay, pollen, floral honey. Taste is slightly sweet, minimally grainy, pale and wheaty malty, mildly bitter and floral, minimally grassy hoppy, slightly yeasty, herbal-spicy, hints of chamomile, mustard seed, a touch of fresh hay, floral honey, orange blossom. Watery texture, rather dry, even minimally repellent palate, medium, prickly carbonation. Somehow paradox clean dirtiness, good balance - a beer with character.

The obligatory 'bruine' in this Martha series, this time not just a dubbel, but a hefty quadrupel, inspired by the great trappist quads. Very thick and frothy, busily cobweb-lacing, very moussy, stable but somewhat coarse, yellowish beige head on an initially clear deep mahogany brown beer with ruby red glow - remaining clear when even the last drop goes in, revealing that this beer is indeed filtered. Aroma initially dominated by prickly carbon dioxide but once this fades, opening up in impressions of brown sugar, candied fig, lots of caramel candy, ruby port, clove, prunes, cooked red apple, raisin bread, dried thyme, ripe Doyenné pear, hints of floor polish, aromatic resin, white pepper, old cinnamon powder, old liquorice and jute - but unfortunately clear 'real' iron as well, confirmed by the 'hand test', as well as that typical 'cooked cloth' smell of pasteurization... Sweetish onset with brown sugariness in its core yet not too sticky, fruity hints of banana, ripe pear, blue plum and date, softly carbonated with full, smooth body; full caramelly maltiness with a brown-bready edge, carrying the sweetness and fruitiness onwards with brown candi sugar remaining noticeable - as noticeable as the iron from the nose, manifesting itself as a distracting metallic accent. Spicy finish, clove and liquorice phenolics, along with a gentle, late and earthy hop bitterness that lingers for a while - its bitterness reinforced by the alcohol, which, even if it comes late enough not to be too disturbing overall, eventually takes on a wry, 'jenever'-like, unpleasantly astringent form. Clearly this beer, though full-bodied, contains too much alcohol for its own good: I think it would have worked a lot better at, say, 9 or 10% ABV max. The iron is an undesirable element as well, probably included for head formation (which is, as we all know, less evident at this strength). Lastly, there is the issue of this beer being filtered and pasteurized like an industrial macro-brew - depriving it of flavour depth, softening breadiness, complexity and decent ageing potential. These elements combined seriously downgraded the experience for me, but I have no doubt that the average Belgian 'streekbieren'-consumer will look past this and enjoy this quad for what it is. As is all too often the case with dubbels, tripels and quadrupels: nice try, but no match for the great Belgian trappist beers in these respective styles.

Bottle from Spar, Ostend. Hazy golden, small, frothy, off-white head. Aroma of apricot, pear, apple peel, pepper, bread crust, herbal mix, hard mango. Taste has sweetish pear, apricot & vague mango, bitter herbs & pepper, bready malty with a touch of honey, slightly wheaty sour perhaps. Floral hoppy finish, yeasty fruit & a faint hint of rum-like alcohol. Medium body, oily texture, average carbonation. Traditional Blonde somewhat enhanced by hops but not quite there where it should be.
