Description
The Historic Brasserie de l'Abbaye du Cateau is located in the historic heart of Cateau Cambrésis, on the site of the former Saint-André abbey, and is now a listed site. In 1775, the abbey already included a brewery. The buildings on either side of the courtyard, currently under renovation, are said to have been the first place of production. This activity lasted until the site closed in 1926, with around 12,000 hectoliters brewed per year.

In 2000, a handful of beer and local heritage enthusiasts proposed saving this iconic landmark and successfully obtained its listing as a Historic Monument.

After 75 years of closure, no fewer than four years of restoration were required to restore it to its former glory and finally, in 2004, brew the first Vivat beer, under the name of the Brasserie Historique de l'Abbaye du Cateau. Although technology has improved over the decades, certain techniques inherited from previous generations are respected and practiced with the same passion.

In 2022, we decided to refocus on our emblem, our flagship product, by renaming ourselves Brasserie Vivat, with an evocative name that is recognizable to all beer lovers!

A new milestone in the long and rich history of our brewery.

This name is not insignificant and also recalls Flanders, evoking the attachment to the region, an emblematic beer-producing region. Indeed, the Vivat Flamand is a tradition during which, with a napkin held above them, the newlyweds receive a few drops of beer, binding them together for eternity.

A traditional moment of sharing and conviviality—such are the values of Vivat.

One of three commissioned beers executed by Holland's barrel aged stout specialist - the other two being aged on bourbon and cognac barrels, respectively. Shared with Jan. Very dense and inches thick, even hard to pour, pale mocha beige, very creamy, plaster-like lacing head on a black beer with not much more than one millimetre of visible burgundy-reddish hue off the edges. Extremely solventy fusel aroma, fresh paint, varnish and nail polish remover, weighing heavily on the nonetheless rich features of hot chocolate sauce, liquorish, Irish coffee, mocha ice cream, wet wooden furniture, hazelnut paste, treacle, candied fig, stewed plums, Flemish beef stew note somewhere, brown soap. Very sweet onset, syrupy, candied fig, light beefy umami accent, soft carb, oily mouthfeel, full but feeling a bit thinner than expected for a beer of this potency; nevertheless a rich chocolatey, walnutty, toffeeish black maltiness fills the mouth, carrying along a roast-chicory-like bitterness in its tail, which in itself is overpowered by the armagnac booziness - heating and chest-warming alright, but even more so by that very strong fusel alcohol effect; lingering 'fondant' chocolate bittersweetness, light but drying tannic effects from the wood and a warming, not unpleasant brandy effect (the armagnac indeed) with even a dash of meaty umami lingering make up for a lot, but there is an overall liquorish flavour persisting through it all which I can imagine makes this beer potentially less drinkable to some. For me, however, it was that strong ethylacetate solvent effect that makes me classify this beer well below many of the wonderful, groundbreaking and often profoundly deep barrel aged stouts De Molen - now sadly in Bavaria's clutches - has produced in its many years of existence. I had two of the three in this series now, but with this much 'solventiness', I will certainly hesitate to buy the third one.

Bottle at home. Clear a bit pale yellow color, decent sized white head. Smell and taste malts and that's it. Absolutely don't know how to describe this beer. Flavor is simply bland. Is it sweet? Not really. Bitter? Not really. Yeasty? Hmm not really. Fruity? Nope. Drinkable but completely uninteresting. 6-3-6-3-10.

Bottle from Carrefour Calais and drunk at home. Hazy pale gold head. Lasting white head. Floral hoppy aroma. Some yeast character no doubt. Not a bad blond. Just a bit too earthy. Good hop aroma. Bit muddy earthy for me.
