Description
Brass Castle commenced brewing in a garage as a commercial home brewer in August 2011 initially in Pocklington, East Yorkshire. In December 2013 they relocated to Malton, North Yorkshire and expanded to a 10BBL plant. Over time, new tanks arrived and a Taphouse was established next door. Success, friends, family and the odd bank loan have got us where we are now.
The brewery has always pushed itself to brew interesting beers, under the very deliberate constraint of doing so without the use of animal products. In turn, this caused Brass Castle to develop a house yeast strain and specialised processes that could guarantee the final product. From December 2017, every beer brewed at Brass Castle has been based on a gluten-free beer recipes – on the basis that beer should be made available to as many people as possible. Most recently, the brewery invested in canning line and carbonation tanks, to spread the beers further than they have gone before.

Keg @ Leeds Beer Festival 2016. Clouded bright amber-gold in colour. Very fruity in both aroma and taste with a stated sweetness in this respect. There’s a bit of a fizz in the palate too.

330ml can @ Chez Sophie, Shrewsbury. Pours clear amber, small white head. Aroma is fairly sweet, some sweetcorn, ostensible Diacetyal but that could just be the malt. Taste is quite sweet, smooth and slightly oily with low carbonation. Perhaps a bit too sweet for me.

Cask @ Kelham Island Tavern, Sheffield. Very dark porter with a very thin head. Has predominantly sweet dark malts throughout its character with hints of roasted ones in its taste. Its strength is evident but not dominant.

Cask @ Port Street Beer House, Manchester. Hazy amber with a thin head. Mildly sweetened hoppy fruity ale, not too flavoursome though as it’s slightly thin tasting.

Keg @ Port Street Beer House, Manchester. Dark lager malt in taste, and tasty, it has a sweetness in this respect, but there’s an ale texture to the beer as well. Drank at a Meet The Brewers session on the 23rd March, and the Brass Castle lot were a nice bunch I’m happy to report. Drank at a Meet The Brewers session.

Clear amber beer. Little aroma. Very light malty fruit taste. Doesn’t taste of a huge amount to be honest. Bit surprised at that from this brewery. It’s not bad it’s just really bland.

Can shared in London - picked up at Utobeer. Pours clear, deep gold woth a creamy, white head. Dry bread in the nose, minerals, toasted pine. Light sweet flavour with crackery malts, flinty minerals, dried bread, pine, orange peel. Medium bodied with fine to average carbonation. Somewhat herbal on the finish, with some toast, more minerals, earth, pine. So so overall.
